Seasons Afield: A Literature Approach to Natural Science for Primary Grades Teacher Guide
Journey with your children through six seasonally based “field guides” or study units in this one-year holistic approach to Natural Science. Based on the German Schullandheim method of learning, an interdisciplinary approach that is both directed and play-based, engaging students in beautiful stories, art, poetry, as well as exploration and discovery. At this point, you may be wondering what that looks like. Let me give you a taste of one of the field guides (units). The Winter Story unit begins with a story from the Brambly Hedge book, which is followed by simple explanations about ice and an introduction to metaphors. The next lesson is a hands-on experiment where children make and observe ice candles to learn the science of phase changes. The final two lessons include a notebooking activity using Watercolor with Me in the Forest, and an additional ice lesson with a moonlit walk and story. Other lessons incorporate picture lessons, recipes, vocabulary words, scavenger hunts and more.
It is suggested that two lessons be completed each week for a complete one-year study, a perfect pace for young learners! Required resources include the literature books, Watercolor with Me in the Forest, Seasons Afield Fieldnotes & Watercolor Cards, and the Notebook. Additional resources are recommended, including additional library books, nature identification guides (Golden Guides and an app called Seek specifically are mentioned), and art supplies. For those who wish to get organized before the guide arrives, the following art supplies are mentioned: watercolors (Winsor and Newton™ for experienced artists or Crayon/Prang for the novice), watercolor brush pen, Washi tape, glue stick, pencil, crayons (including white), and backpack or drawstring bag to carry art supplies. Some household or easily found items are also necessary for activities.
Provides an excellent introduction to the natural world around us that appeals to parents and young learners alike. I love how all learning styles are engaged through the varied activities, but more importantly, children are guided into an appreciation for the beauty around them. Meets Next Gen Science Standards. No religious content instruction. Dedication page states, “Since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.” (Romans 1:20) ~ Deanne
Seasons Afield is a Schullandheim approach to primary science and nature study for primary grade students. This German concept to natural science reflects all we hold dear, combining school, nature, and home. Your field guides will direct your studies of the natural world, using picture books to take you on a journey through the seasons.
Explore the outdoor world through observation, learning the science behind your discoveries. You will learn about decomposition and mushroom mycelium; become a tree detective and study the senescence of leaves; practice cyanotype printing to capture the structure of a snowflake; discover the life cycles and habitats of your favorite creatures. You will encounter changes in flora and fauna through fieldwork experiments, guided watercolor lessons, literature, and scientific wonder, while you awaken a love of nature—first in you as a mentor, and in turn, your children.
