VIDEO LECTURES TEACH STEP-BY-STEP

Dr. Shormann teaches every lesson step by step on a digital blackboard that looks and sounds like a real classroom. The only difference is, you can easily pause, rewind and fast-forward the lecture, learning at your own pace. With degrees in aerospace engineering and science, Dr. Shormann has over 15 years experience teaching all levels of Saxon Math. His unique experience enables him to understand how all the lessons in a book fit together as well as how the curriculum builds all the way through Calculus and Physics.

BITE-SIZED LESSONS INCREASE UNDERSTANDING

Teaching three to five practice problems in each lesson, Dr. Shormann reviews previously learned concepts and connects each "bite-sized" concept to the next. This makes complex concepts easier to grasp while showing students the big picture. During the lecture, students work interactively by taking notes and working the practice problems with him. They are encouraged to pause, rewind, and fast-forward until they fully understand the new concept.

TAUGHT FROM A BIBLICAL FOUNDATION

Connecting Scripture with math and science, he teaches math as the God-given language of science, a tool for understanding God's creation and the purpose and pattern evident in Creation. The history of mathematics is also discussed which shows the tremendous Christian heritage of mathematics and science, and how all mathematics resulted from a study of His creation. It doesn't take long to discuss, but it is important to remind all students that God is the Author and Creator of all knowledge, including mathematics. Consider this: in our world, there exists a huge collection of facts, all subject to interpretation. Who do you want to interpret those facts for your child, a Christian or a non-Christian?

CONTINUAL REVIEW INCREASES LONGTERM RETENTION

After the lecture, students complete homework problems in the Saxon textbook. Each homework set provides continual review of previously learned concepts. Research has shown this method superior for increasing long term retention and recall time but it can be a problem for students who need to re-learn forgotten concepts. With DIVE, the student simply re-watches the corresponding DIVE lecture which is printed in parentheses next to each question. Better than giving them the answer, the student relearns the forgotten concept and immediately applies it to the problem; significantly increasing retention.

EXTRA HELP TO ENSURE UNDERSTANDING

The Saxon Homestudy Kit includes a Solutions Manual which shows how to work each problem step by step. We recommend reviewing the correpsonding DIVE lesson first, then consult the Solutions Manual if further help is needed. If more help is needed, you can email Dr. Shormann for more detailed explainations. However, our program is so comprehensive, this is rarely necessary.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why use Saxon Math?

Saxon Math is a research proven math curriculum developed in the 1980s by John Saxon. The Saxon approach is unique in that, instead of massing instruction, practice, and assessments, Saxon distributes them throughout the lessons and school year. Most math programs use a massed approach, whereby instruction, practice, and assessment of a skill or concept occur within a short period of time and are usually clustered within a single chapter or unit. Research has shown that Incremental Development, Distributed Practice, and Cumulative Assesment is superior to all other teaching methods, increasing longterm retention and recall speed which naturally leads to higher standardized test scores. However, most curriculums do not use this method because it is more difficult to teach and requires continual re-teaching of previously learned concepts. As an experienced Saxon teacher, Dr. Shormann provides comprehensive lectures in a format that is easy to re-teach forgotten or missed concepts.

Where should I place my child?

If your child has done well in their previous course and it is a fairly rigorous curriculum, such as A Beka, Horizons, or Bob Jones, your child should be able to transition directly into Saxon at the appropriate grade level. If your child has struggled with math in the past, has been in public school, or you have other concerns, we recommend taking the placement test .

Caution: While you can administer the Placement Test, if Saxon was not used for the previous course, the it may place your student lower than necessary. Most students should be placed at or no lower than one grade level below. not be placed more than one level below their grade* in the chart below.

Category Description for Saxon Math
Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

D.I.V.E. (Digital Interactive Video Education) is ideal for the student who needs a little more explanation than what is in the text. The lectures are approximately 10-20 minutes long, and each is stored in its own file. To use D.I.V.E., the student opens his text to the next lesson and opens the corresponding lecture file on the computer. Lessons take place on a chalkboard/whiteboard screen. You hear the teacher and watch what he writes on the board. In a typical lecture, the teacher gives a short explanation and works several practice problems (not those found in the text). Lectures are given by Dr. David Shormann, an experienced math and science teacher who is an expert on Saxon Math. Lectures can be paused, rewound, or fast-forwarded, so the student can work at his own pace. These are available in two formats – online download (lifetime access) or CD-ROM. D.I.V.E. Compass is a secular version, available in CD-ROM format or digital Download. CD system requirements: Windows XP or higher, Mac OSX, speakers, CD-ROM drive. D.I.V.E. is developed for use with Saxon Math but not by Saxon publishers.

Category Description for Dive Math Cd-Roms

Video clip lectures developed for use with Saxon's Home Study Kits (though designed FOR, they were not designed BY Saxon). Lecture sets, which contain one lecture per lesson, are available by level for Math 54 through Calculus and Physics. Each level is contained on one or two CD-ROMs. D.I.V.E. lectures are ideal for the student who needs a little more explanation than what's available in the text. I've found that even when you carefully read a math text, it's often easier to understand a new concept if you can hear someone else verbalize it. The lectures are approximately 10-20 minutes long (the higher the level, the longer the lecture). Each lecture is stored in its own file. To use D.I.V.E., the student opens his text to the next lesson and opens the corresponding lecture file on the computer. Lectures take place on a chalkboard/whiteboard screen. You hear the teacher, but don't actually see him - rather you only see what he writes on the board. The student's job is to follow along in the text (please note: the D.I.V.E. CDs do not follow along with the text on a problem-by-problem basis) and to take notes. In a typical lecture, the teacher gives a short explanation and works several practice problems. Lectures are given by Dr. David Shormann, an experienced math and science teacher. Aside from an occasional quote from the Bible (used to preface a lecture), the content is always focused on the topic at hand. Lectures can easily be paused, rewound, or fast-forwarded so the student can work at his own pace. For the Physics level, a Physics Video Lab is available in addition to the regular D.I.V.E CD-ROM. This convenient video tutorial follows Saxon Physics 1st Edition and the regular CD lectures. It performs the experiments for you using several thousand dollars worth of science equipment, including radar guns, photogate timers, and stroboscopes. Each Physics Video Lab includes photos, video, and graphs and tables from the lab experiment. Students can print out a lab activity sheet, watch the lab and record experimental data, pause the CD-ROM to complete calculations, and then turn the CD back on to check work. 23 labs are included in all and most of them follow the scientific method (question, hypothesis, methods, results, discussion). All labs are taught from a Christian perspective. Four quarterly exams, with video solutions, are also provided (these are based on the exams found in the Saxon Physics test book, so students can study these to prepare for those exams). At each level, these tutorials provide valuable verbal instruction for students. Please note that the edition of the DIVE CD must match the edition of the Saxon Math book you are using. System requirements: Windows XP or higher (including Windows 8), Mac OS (all versions including Yosemite). ~ Anh
