Publisher's Description of Abraham Lincoln/D'Aulaire 75th Anniversary Ed
Abraham Lincoln continues to stand as America's most beloved President. Of our nation's historical icons, Lincoln is the quintessential embodiment of American possibility in his mythic-like rise from rail-splitter to Chief Executive and Emancipator of the oppressed. The admiration felt by Americans for Lincoln's humble integrity, his noble statesmanship, and his keen sense of justice, is beautifully captured in the d'Aulaires' art and prose.
Not since 1957 have d'Aulaire fans been able to enjoy the beauty of the stone lithographic work that earned these beloved author-artists the prestigious Caldecott Medal in 1940. Now, in honor of the 75th Anniversary of their Caldecott Medal award, and marking a century and a half of emancipation, readers young and old will delight in this biography of America's most beloved President. Beautiful Feet Books worked with Timothy Young, curator of Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscript Collection at Yale University Library, to restore the original art through brand new reproductions of the 1939 lithographic proofs.
Focusing on beautifully illustrated picture books, hands-on activities, and simple discussions, the focus is helping young children enjoy hearing quality literature and discussing it with others.
We were first introduced the the d'Aulaire's book about Abraham Lincoln in the hospital emergency waiting room as we were waiting to get stitches on my son's forehead My husband began reading the book aloud but our name was called halfway through When my son heard that we had to leave the book behind he held back a fresh burst of tears My husband quickly promised that we would order that very book as soon as we got home Butit was out of print!!! We did manage to obtain a copy and we discovered that there were others by the same couple A year or so later I was delighted to see them come back into print available through Rainbow We've since purchased Columbus and George Washington and we plan to continue adding to our collection The first thing one notices about the books is the breathtaking full-page illustrations The books are written in narrative form with many stories details and events that appeal to children They include information about the subject's childhood family accomplishments strengths and weaknesses I have learned a lot reading them to my kids! The stories are 'living' so they really stick with my kids and me I know one thing for sure we'll never forget that Abraham Lincoln had white scar over his eyebrow after fighting off pirates just as my son now has a scar above his eyebrow!
