Mandarin Chinese Writing Practice Book
Chinese words are often compound, built by combining multiple words or parts. This book teaches over 1,000 words, organizing them by topic (actions, animals, clothing, etc.), then further organizing by basic character. First, learn a basic character such as person, then easily expand your vocabulary. In the rest of the person chapter, learn words that include this character, such as crowd, assist, stop, inside, and enter. For each character, nine components explain each word: a simplified and a traditional version of the character; stroke number; short definition; transliteration (pinyin) with tonal marks; definition; and additional common words using that character (with pinyin). Superimposed on a larger sized character is a lighter drawing as a mnemonic tool. For example, the word person looks like a flipped y. A lighter drawing of a stick man is added as a visual memory tool. Next, you'll learn the word meaning inside since it uses person as a base. Overlaid on the character inside is a stick man in a building with the explanation, “inside or within an enclosure." Book includes a free pronunciation CD; publisher website provides audio via free digital audio downloads. Meets the HSK China exam Levels 1 and 2 vocabulary needs and includes detailed index. 216 pgs, pb. ~ Ruth
Each double page spread has squared paper on the right-hand side for practicing formation of the Chinese characters, and lined paper on the left-hand side for note-taking. A ten-page reference section at the back of the notebook gives Mandarin character charts, key vocabulary, and basic grammar tips.
