This course serves two purposes – consistent practice with an emphasis on formation, size, spacing, and slant as well as a transition to developing sentence and paragraph construction skills and creative writing skills. Students complete one page per day (5'16" lines with dotted lines at the ¾ line. Starting with a review of letters, lessons include a warm-up (letter strokes), a trace/practice section (letters & words); and a trace/write section (Bible verses copywork). Next are lessons in practical penmanship: lists, schedules, invitations, math problems, notes, etc. The focus changes in the last two-thirds of the book. These lessons include sentences (topic and concluding), paragraphs reports, stories about pictures, and stories from prompts. A set of Extra Practice sheets and a place to put final drafts (My Writing Collection) complete the book.
Sharpen your 3rd graders' penmanship skill and teach them to write with purpose. This book begins with various "Practical Penmanship" exercises to give students plenty of practice in the writing of words, letters, numbers –all in ¾" spacing lines! In 2nd semester, the focus will shift from using beautiful penmanship to learning to write compositions creatively. From beautiful penmanship to figurative language and poetry, your child will perfect his craft of writing in appearance and content. Teach him to observe the world around him, and then write about it. Different poem forms, alliteration, metaphors, and more are several English tools that your child will be able to recognize and use. Weekly penmanship test and supplementary writing exercises are also included in the back of the book.
Language arts programs listed in this section cover most areas of language arts (reading/literature, writing, grammar, spelling and handwriting) in one curriculum, although some skill areas may be covered with less intensity than a focused, stand-alone course.

Abeka® Language Arts Grade 3 begins the four-pronged emphasis of reading skills (analysis & discussion), writing (academic & creative), spelling/poetry, and grammar. A complete Language Arts program requires both a Child and a Parent Kit. Child Kits contain the texts, readers, and all essential materials. Parent Kits include full lesson plans, answer keys, and level-based required materials.
