Piece together your own Mark I Tank with this 878-piece COBI building block set! Part of COBI’s Great War Historical Collection, this set contains the blocks needed to construct the world’s very first tank.
The Mark I was developed by the British in 1916 during World War I as a response to trench warfare that had made gaining territory extremely difficult. Despite weighing 28 tons and only managing a top speed of 4 mph, the tank proved capable of surviving machine-gun fire and could traverse difficult terrains, including trenches, rubble, and barbed wire. The Mark I first saw action during the Somme Offensive and was improved upon until the end of the war in 1918. The “Male” version of the tank featured two 57mm main guns and three machine guns, while the “Female” version featured five machine guns and no main guns. A total of 150 Mark I tanks were produced.
This 1:35 scale model features the components of the “Male” version of the Mark I, including movable main guns and working tracks. A tank driver minifigure also comes with the set. The Great War ushered in the era of steel elephants, which continues to this day. It was then that the design of one of the first tanks was born: MARK I (Male) number C.19. You can build the prototype of all future tanks with 878 COBI construction blocks. The model measures 28 cm in length and thanks to the use of the 1:35 modeling scale, the model fits COBI figures and other vehicles released in this size. The tank is equipped with working tracks, rotating cannons and opening flaps. Markings and emblems are made of colorful blocks and durable prints that do not wear off even during intensive use. The set includes a figure of a British tank driver from the Great War period and a plate with the name of the set and the logo of The Tank Museum, which houses the original tank on which we modeled this set.
The British Mark I tank (Male version) was produced in 1916 during the Great War. It was one of the first tanks used in military history. The designation "Male" in the name meant that it was a variant of the tank equipped with a combination of cannons located in turrets on the sides of the vehicle and machine guns. The "Female" versions of this type of tank were equipped with multiple machine guns only. The vehicle was powered by a gasoline engine that allowed it to travel at speeds up to 4 miles per hour. It was slow and bulky, but its armor provided some protection against enemy infantry small arms. The Mark I (Male) no C.19. tank was first used in combat in 1916 at the Battle of the Somme during World War I. Its main goal was to break through enemy fortifications, destroy barbed wire and support the infantry in capturing positions. Although it was not a perfect combat vehicle, its presence on the battlefield played an important role in the evolution of war strategy.
