One morning Mark finds a mysterious blob of jelly on the beach. He slides it into a bag of seawater and takes it with him to work to show his grandmother. She promises him a surprise later, and they leave the bag by the sink while they work their food stand. As his grandma and uncle fill orders, Mark refills the straws, napkins, and condiments. After a busy day of work, they close up the stand, and Mark's grandmother takes him to a boat. The owner drives out to sea, and Mark receives his beautiful surprise.

The scientific name for the creatures in this story is Ctenophore, they are also called comb jellies or sea gooseberries. In New England they are most plentiful in the late summer. They are not true jellyfish because they don’t have stinging cells or tentacles. Moonjellies are harmless.
