The Phonics & Language 2 workbook cover phonics applications, grammar, sentence structure, and language development. Colorful and interspersed with engaging graphics, lessons are divided into four theme-based units (National Parks and Travel). The first lesson entitled Pond reviews and expands phonics skills. The second, Travel Around the World continues to expand phonics, adding spelling rules and introductory grammar (sentence punctuation and nouns). Jungle, the third section, expands the grammar instruction to capitalizations, punctuation, verbs, usage, and introduces diagramming. Camping, the fourth section, continues the grammar with adjectives/adverbs along with A-B-C order and some dictionary work. 354 pgs.
Publisher's Description of Phonics and Language 2 (Bound)
Teach your student the wonderful gift of the English language! This book gives your student an excellent foundation in sentence structure, language development, and grammar. It uses the special phonics sounds that will help expand his vocabulary, enhance his word analysis skills, and increase his reading speed. Each lesson is filled with special word challenges, puzzles, riddles, and other exercises. By the end of the year, your student's reading skills will be sharpened, and he will write more clearly, correctly, and concisely.
Frankly, to use this program solely as a 2nd Grade phonics/reading program will be difficult, as the phonics concepts are so thoroughly integrated with reading skills and general language arts. If doing so, you will need:
Language Arts 2 Curriculum/Lessons Plans
Phonics and Language 2 (both parent and student)
Phonics and Language 2 Tests (both student and answer key)Handbook for Reading
For the complete Grade 2 Language Arts you will need to add the Reading Program (11 Readers plus the Reading 2 Answer Key and Comprehension 2 Skill Sheets and Answer Key), Writing with Phonics 2 (cursive or manuscript), 2nd Grade Writing Tablet, and Spelling & Poetry 1.
Simple, gentle introduction to grammar/language arts that is also thorough and builds upon itself. I personally wait until my child has very strong reading skills and comprehension before beginning a grammar/language arts program. I have tried a few all-in-one books in hopes of covering grammar in a year or two but all were either too advanced or nothing but simple review with no depth. Because I waited, my children flew through the first book in the Abeka language series, but they also had a very high success and retention rate. If you are looking for a stand alone language arts textbook that can be used independently by a strong reader, I highly recommend this course. It is very much spiral based with each level getting progressively more difficult so you will see the typical repetition of concepts, etc between levels. However, if your goal is a good understanding of grammar and the ability to communicate clearly and precisely through written word, you should see positive results with this. FYI, if your child has had little to no exposure to language arts (as mine did not) it is important to start with Language 1, no matter how simplistic it looks. That is experience speaking ;-). Abeka progresses quickly and a slower learner (or unenthusiastic grammar student) will need the overly simplistic (for their age) introduction.
