Barron's American Sign Language
This book with online access to video lessons is a 2-year course on ASL. It is an incredible value! The book is meant to be self-taught, but you could use it in a group as well. The online teacher is deaf himself and the access was very easy to navigate. The book itself is direct and clear as can be, but it is not pretty and colorful. I guess for the price, that is just fine!
- Chapters 1-2 cover the history of ASL
- Chapters 3-5 cover grammar, finger spelling, and numbers.
- Chapters 6-15 are your ASL lessons in conversation, role shifting, directional verbs, health, etc.
Each lesson includes dialogues, breaking down the dialogue, exploring signs in the dialogue, synonyms, more vocabulary, practice with the goal of mastery, and grammar practice with answers.
The course is fascinating and so clear for the beginner to use. A middle schooler could certainly complete this book on their own. For a high school student, with the appropriate amount of documented practice, this could count as 2 years of ASL on a transcript as elective credit. Not consumable. Not reproducible. 682 pgs, pb. ~Sara
