Publisher's Description of Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting Series Book E Fourth Edition
This brilliantly crafted book is a welcome complement to your entire school curriculum. Writing practice on topics ranging from the solar system to plants and animals. While practicing cursive italic joins, students explore the world of science. At the end of the book, students are shown how to make booklets and envelopes! Letter height 6, 5, & 4 mm.
Mom's horrible handwriting inspired us to use an italic handwriting program with our kids. It's difficult not to produce at least legible writing in Italics. Another plus is that manuscript flows into cursive - letters don't completely change, they just join. Not only does this seem sensible to us, but the many compliments the children have received on their handwriting have further encouraged us in this approach. (Children begin moving into cursive writing in Level C.) The last level gets into calligraphy toward the end. From there, follow up with a good calligraphy book for Jr. High/High School and continue handwriting as an art form! Instruction Manual applies to all levels.
We've used all these books up to E, but even though she's 11, the writing got too small in the 2nd half of the book. She struggled to write neatly with the smaller font. So we are taking a break from it, and doing practice with an additional cursive book (presidents), with beginner cursive (the advanced cursive has small font, also)

One of my kids has forgotten how to write in cursive. He used the Penny-Gardner curriculum for a while. I'm hoping this will help refresh his memory.

If I want to switch to Italic handwriting for my 4th grader, should I begin with the 4th grade book or an earlier one?
I think these books are more skill based than grade based with grades being assigned only as a guide. If you haven't used italic cursive before I would start with the level of handwriting your child needs. If their manuscript is fluent then you can skip forward to the cursive section but if their manuscript needs work then cover that part first. If they need more work with manuscript then go back to Book D.
