Each worldview has a distinctive impact on theology, philosophy, ethics, biology, psychology, sociology, law, politics, economics, and history. An examination of each worldview first by itself and then within each subject. The 2nd edition Text corresponds to the 5th Ed. Student/Teacher materials.

The Textbook, subtitled A Survey of Competing Worldviews, is the cornerstone of the academic content of the course. Extensive endnotes follow each chapter, and both a Glossary and Index are provided.

Publisher's Description of Understanding the Times (2nd Edition) Textbook

Your view of God determines your view of the world.

You hold in your hands a landmark guide to understanding the ideas and forces shaping our times. Understanding the Times offers a fascinating, comprehensive look at the how the tenets of the Christian worldview compares with the five major competing worldviews of our day: Islam, Secular Humanism, Marxism, New Age, and Postmodernism.

Understanding the Times is a systematic way to understand the ideas that rule our world. While the material is expansive, the engaging, easy-to-understand writing style invites you to discover the truths of God – and our world. This classic should be on the shelf of every Christian home, on the desk of every pastor, and in the hands of every Christian student headed off to college.

Ideas have consequences! For more than fifty years young Christians have been trained by Dr. David Noebel and Summit Ministries to understand the times; to recognize both the ideas that permeate our world cultures and their consequences as well as the appropriate biblical response. What started as week-long intensive summer seminars grew into a year-long high school course. Revised in 2016 and now co-authored by Dr. Jeff Myers, the core message of this material remains the same but now reflects the most up-to-date arguments. Although technically a 2nd edition, the Textbook with its 2016 copyright corresponds to the 2020 Teacher Manual and Student Manual; both technically 5th editions. The discussion-based, sequential curriculum now has digital options. Instead of accompanying DVDs as in the past, the Teacher Manual provides a code which allows the teacher to access online videos that complement the lessons.

Six worldviews are presented (expanded from the four worldviews outlined in the previous version of the Textbook): Christianity, Islam, secularism, Marxist, new spirituality, and postmodernism. Each of these worldviews has a distinctive impact on theology, philosophy, ethics, biology, psychology, sociology, law, politics, economics, and history. An examination of each worldview, first by itself and then within each subject area, comprises the 16-unit study sandwiched between an introduction (Battle of Ideas) and conclusion. Course components include a Teacher Manual w/ weblink to online videos, a Student Textbook, and a Student Manual.

Why did you choose this?

Homeschool coop class.

Liked the previous book of the series

My daughter is a rising Junior in High School and needs this for her Bible 11 class.

required by school

What ages or grades is this book appropriate for? Would it be okay to use for a 9th grader and 11th grader together, going through it with a parent?

Yes, it would be very appropriate for a 9th and 11th plus parent. The text targets high school students, in general.

What ages or grades do you recommend using this book with? Would it be appropriate for a 9th grader and 11th grader to go through together with mom or dad?

My 11th grader is doing this study on her own. After each chapter she gives me a verbal overview. My friend’s son is also doing the curriculum and she is doing it with him. I think it would be appropriate for a ninth grader, especially if a parent is reading through the material with them.

Will we have access to the videos through Summit Ministries using the textbook, or do we have to purchase the Student Manual for those?

Actually, neither of them include the Summit Ministries videos. Those are only available in the teaching package which includes the textbook, student manual, and teacher manual plus six CD-ROMs and two DVDs with the video presentations. We are not currently selling this package - only the textbook, student manual and teacher manual.

Does the textbook give access to the videos at Summit Ministries so that you can view them along with the readings, or is this only an option if you purchase the student text?

It’s only the textbook. Our kids we’re taking a class with a tutor and she had purchased the code as a teacher to get access to the videos. I think you need to purchase a ‘full version’ in order to get the text and videos together.

Is item # 009840 (Understanding the Times) the 2015 version?

Yes, it is.
