Publisher's Description of Primary Language Lessons
Teaching your children proper English - Emma Serl's Primary Language Lessons makes it easy, even for the novice. An experienced teacher of the early twentieth century, Emma Serl recognized the two things necessary for teaching proper English: capture the child's interest and drill, drill, drill. Primary Language Lessons is a drill book, but with a difference. Imaginative lessons and short, jargon-free instructions for teachers make it a pleasure for both student and teacher - especially when the teacher is a home schooling mom. What makes this book different? Good literature. Emma Serl makes liberal use of writings by the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson and Samuel Taylor Coleridge as well as fables, folklore and maxims. Famed artwork. Using reproductions of prominent paintings, Miss Serl trains children in observation and discussion. A unique approach to teaching oral language skills, it helps train children in art appreciation as well. Comprehensive lessons and drills in the things parents want their children to master. The exercises here cover proper English usage, composition, punctuation, memorization, speaking, letter writing, dictation, reading and etiquette in writing. This book is now paperback.

An option for those who want to employ the methods of Charlotte Mason in their English program. Reprints of texts used in the early 1900s, these contain black/white period illustrations (incorporated into the lessons), memorization, classic literature excerpts, narration, dictation, copy work and composition. Instruction is self-contained. These are very simple to use - just open up and go. Lessons are presented in small, manageable pieces with many exercises done orally, making these an attractive choice for the student as well. Teacher's Guides provide instructional information for the teacher (i.e. these words are prepositions, words that show position, direction ...) and answers as well as extended activity suggestions and directions (i.e. create a preposition mobile by...). Teacher aids include reproducible grading rubrics, writing and dictation worksheets, calendar (primary), envelope, story map (intermediate) and Venn diagram masters. Primary is 164 lessons; Intermediate is 301 lessons.

What age is this text book best suited for?

I am currently using this book for my 2nd grader. We are halfway through the 164 lessons, and I would highly recommend this book for complementary grammar instruction. I feel that the lessons would also be appropriate for an advanced 1st grader and a 3rd grader who is struggling or needs grammar reinforcement. Some lessons, like letter writing, have to be adapted to the modern format, but I usually make handouts of the lessons, so adapting is easy. Also, some of the illustrations for the picture lessons are difficult to study from the book pages, as they are small and in black and white, but the images can be found in color online, allowing me to display the picture on an iPad for better viewing.

Is this hardcover or paperback?

Yes, this is a hardcover book. Very pleasant to use!
The teacher's guide is a softcover/ paperback.

Someone said there is a workbook for this. Where can I locate that?

The publisher of this version does not have a workbook, per se. They do publish a Teacher Guide which provides instructional information for the teacher (i.e. these words are prepositions, words that show position, direction ...) and answers as well as extended activity suggestions and directions (i.e. create a preposition mobile by...). Teacher aids include reproducible grading rubrics, writing and dictation worksheets, calendar (primary), envelope, story map (intermediate) and Venn diagram masters. Here is the link for that Teacher Guide:

Is this a workbook?

No, it’s a textbook. There is a workbook that has been created to go along with it, but a notebook is all you need to go along with this text.
