Description

Different from your typical Bible Story approach for children, this series and this guide, firstly, teaches young children who Jesus is. The lessons in this level teach on who Jesus was, what He did, and what He taught. Lessons are organized in nine (9) categories: Stories Jesus Told, Miracles Jesus Did, Teachings of Jesus, Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ Early Life, Jesus’ Disciples, Opposition to Jesus, End of Jesus’ Life, and The Rest of the Story. Each lesson can be broken up over 2-3 days a week. There are 39 lessons in total. Flexibility is offered in how you facilitate each lesson: read the scripted text while student’s color; read scripted text one day, color another day, and do activity pages on another. You decide the flow that works best for you and your students. Scripture is provided in the guide and is taken from the NIV. Each lesson provides a parent section that orients and helps you handle the lessons teachings and scripture sections. The instructor guide is intended to be used alongside the Year One Activity Book (008092). For more detailed information and fuller examples consult Telling God’s Story: A Parents’ Guide to Teaching the Bible (008093). 125 pgs, pb. ~Rebecca

Publisher's Description of Telling God's Story, Year One: Instructor Text and Teaching Guide

The first in a series designed to guide young students through the Bible, Year 1 provides weekly lessons for young elementary-grade students based on the parables and the Gospels. Contains background information for the teacher, a biblical passage to read aloud, and a scripted explanation of the passage designed especially for young children to grasp with ease.

Scripted explanations and important background information guide the teacher through each passage. When combined with the required Activity Book, the Year 1 Instructor Text provides a full year of religious instruction for elementary students in the parables and gospels. For ultimate support, add in A Parents’ Guide to Teaching the Bible.

The accompanying Activity Book provides historically accurate coloring pages, learning projects, and group activities to fill out an entire week of home, school, or Sunday School study. When combined with the Activity Book, this Year 1 curriculum provides an entire year of religious instruction. For ultimate support, add in A Parents’ Guide to Teaching the Bible.

Category Description for Telling God's Story

Providing parents a thoughtful and thorough roadmap for teaching the Bible, this curriculum focuses on knowing Jesus. The Parents' Guide outlines this approach and could stand on its own, but also serves as an introduction to the courses. Years 1-3 cover nine categories: Stories Jesus Told, Miracles and Teachings of Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus' Early Life, Jesus' Disciples, Opposition to Jesus, End of Jesus' Life, and the Rest of the Story. Categories repeat each year with more material and depth added. Year 4 examines what happens when Jesus leaves. From His earthly departure until the Second Coming, children study the book of Acts and NT letters.

Following the same structure, two components are necessary. The Instructor Text & Teaching Guide provides the yearly overview, and scripted text to read aloud and discuss. Parents are encouraged to read the background information and theological perspective ahead of time.

The Student Guide and Activity Book provides a coloring page and activity/project for each lesson. Activities vary. For example: crafts, games, music, cooking, and word searches. Activity pages are reproducible for families. Teacher-student interaction is important, but teacher prep is minimal.

Category Description for Telling God's Story Year 1 (Gr. 1)
"

During his lifetime, Jesus introduced himself through stories, parables, and teachings. In this first year (Meeting Jesus), these will be familiar to adults with a church background. However, these stories and teachings lay the foundation for everything we need to know about Jesus. Couple that with details of his earthly life and ministry and you have the nine categories covered in this series.

  • Stories Jesus Told
  • Miracles Jesus Did
  • Teachings of Jesus
  • The Sermon on the Mount
  • Jesus' Early Life
  • Jesus' Disciples
  • Opposition to Jesus
  • End of Jesus' Life
  • The Rest of the Story

In addition to 4-5 weekly lessons in each of these categories, there are three supplemental lessons that focus on his trial, crucifixion, and resurrection so this important part of the story is not slighted.

Stories/parables include the persistent widow, the mustard seed, and the Pharisee/tax collector while miracles include the five loaves/two fish and Jesus walking on water.

Instructor text is 125 pgs. Activity Book is 405 pgs. Both are paperback. All scripture references are from the NIV.
