Building Thinking Skills Book 3 Figural with Answers
This engaging 288-page book develops critical thinking skills necessary for success in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and standardized tests in Grades 7-12+. The Building Thinking Skills® series is the bestselling thinking skills program in the world! The engaging, highly-effective activities are developmentally sequenced. Each skill (for example, classifying) is presented in the semi-concrete figural-spatial form and in the abstract verbal form in this book's companion Building Thinking Skills® Level 3 Verbal. Students also learn important academic vocabulary, concepts, and skills as they analyze relationships between objects, between words, and between objects and words by:
- Observing, recognizing, and describing characteristics
- Distinguishing similarities and differences
- Identifying and completing sequences, classifications, and analogies
These processes help students develop superior thinking and communication skills that lead to deeper content learning in all subjects.
LEVEL 3 FIGURAL
- Describing shapes
- Figures: compare / describe / copy / enlarge / divide
- Diagrams: overlapping classes / Venn / branching / cycle
- Mental pattern folding / symmetry
- Directionality / Position in space
- Mental rotation / reflection / tumbling / stacking / folding of 2-D objects
- Congruence / area / volume
- Analogies: size / color / orientation / detail
- Visual motor integration and memory
- Use of graphic organizers
- Symmetry / Tessellation of solids
Teaching Support
Activities are modeled to reinforce skills and concepts. An answer guide is now included, however, a separate Instruction/Answer Guide is also available but is not required. The optional teaching guide includes objectives and focus questions that reinforce analytical skills. See components sold separately above for ordering information about the separate, optional Instruction/Answer Guide.
May be used earlier with students completing previous level. Activities are reviewed and have "branched" into additional skills and more sophistication, so much so that verbal and figural skills are now separated into different books. A very brief sampling of included skills: deductive reasoning, denotation and connotations, following and writing directions, time, degree of meaning, cause-and-effect words, flowcharting and scheduling, Venn and branching diagrams, congruence, area, volume, and rotation and reflection of two and three dimensional objects. Student books now include an answer key (but no teaching helps). An optional PDF version of the Teacher Guide is available separately, which contains the answer key plus a teaching guide (objectives, focus questions, teaching helps).

ACT/SAT
My eighth grader is going to public school this year. Critical thinking skills seem to be one thing kids are sorely lacking these days. My kids have always done the Building Thinking Skills books over…
We have been using Book 2 and my son has enjoyed and learned a lot, so we are moving on to Book 3
