easy to use
This workbook is easy to use: it lays open nicely, it is obvious how to use it, and the letters are formed in a way that still looks like traditional printing, but is less awkward (and more like real life) than the strict ball-and-stick method (do any of us actually make an "a" by making a complete circle, lifting the pencil, and then drawing the stick?!) We began with this grade 1 book for my 7 year old, who could already print, but not well. It will not take us the entire year--we do about 2 pages per day, which takes perhaps 10 minutes.

Gentle Approach Appreciated
Both my boys struggle with handwriting. Thanks for making such a user friendly book. My 6-year-old never once fought with his writing assignment, and his handwriting is looking better (most of the time).

My favorite thing about "My Printing Book" is that it is addressed to the child, not the teacher. In the very front of the book, there is a letter to the student that even encourages him/her to color the pictures, and in effect, "own" the book for his/her own. We are using it this year with my 6 year-old son, who has never enjoyed handwriting, and as a result, as never excelled at it. Last year, (his kindergarten year), we used another curriculum and ended up putting handwriting away completely toward the end of the year (February or March, maybe?) because it had become such a sore spot for much frustration between me and him. I just decided we'd try again this year with a fresh start with a new curriculum. So far, (we're about 2/3 of the way through it), it has not been the cure-all for our handwriting frustrations that I wish it could be, but while he still doesn't like handwriting, it's not as stressful as it was last year! Because it's addressed to him, contains interesting sentences to copy, and plenty of pictures, he's more willing to give it a chance, and for that reason, I'm seriously considering ordering another book just like it once he's finished and letting him complete the whole thing all over again.

Such a help for my young writer
My youngest was struggling with forming her letters and I was nervous about teaching her correctly as she is strongly left handed and I'm not. This book helped bridge the gap for us and she has done very well! I highly recommend this program.

Why did you choose this?

Next one in the series...successful pick for kids.

Handwriting work for my 1st grader. Have used this curriculum with each of my kids.

We use this series for each student, so now my son is ready for this workbook

HWOT is one of the best handwriting programs out there. It's really helped all my children learn how to print well. I recommend this to everyone!

I have a second grader (3rd in fall) who is not brilliant at handwriting. Which book would be good to start with? He can write but it is barely legible and I want something for him to sit and do so he slows down and writes correctly. Would the first grade or second grade book be better to start for correcting the poor writing?

You can probably start with Printing Power, but you should know that the strength of this program lies in its multisensory approach. I strongly recommend getting the teacher's manual and using the strategies it covers for helping your child physically prepare for writing. My kids loved the wood pieces for capital letters, but the roll-a-dough letters and chalk slate for the wet-dry try are also good choices.

The HWOT website is also full of good ideas and free printables that will help you. I use it for custom copywork pages.

I would start with first and be vigilant with practice and every time doing it right. I would say things like well it's not good but will work and now my 4th grader still struggles. Better to be consistent from the beginning.

I am deciding between Letters and Numbers for Me and My Printing Book. My daughter will start Kindergarten this Fall. She already knows how to write her letters but could use help with writing them on the lines and spelling words. Which would be best?

I would go with the My Printing book. It progresses to words and not just letter formation. I think Letters and Numbers for me would just be review for her.

Do I really need the printing teachers guide? Or can I just buy the printing book for my son?

I didn't buy the teachers guide and feel it was not needed. Our son did great just using the workbook.
