Megawords 3 Student Book 2ED

I got it for spelling concerns but I really liked and appreciated the reading component as well. I didn't have him work through the whole book. Instead I used it as more of a remediation tool by picking and choosing which lessons I felt would most benefit him based on the Megawords placement test booklet. However, I would not hesitate to use this as a spelling/reading program. It's been a couple years since he used this and when I retested him to see if he needed remediation anywhere in this series, I discovered he did really well. I really believe this strengthened his reading/spelling foundation and wouldn't hesitate to recommend or encourage others to try it.

While I do not believe a product exists to turn our child into a spelling whiz, I am pleased to say we are finally seeing improvements after using Megawords 2 & 3. Here is what's working for us. I have her read an entire column from the new list aloud to me. Any word she can't pronounce I mark as a vocabulary word. Then she rereads that column & defines or uses each word in a sentence. Any word she doesn't know is marked as vocabulary as well. After working through the entire list we are done for the day. The next day she writes each vocabulary word on an index card with the definition on the back. The third day we begin working though the list's pages. There is great variety in these pages including dictation, completing sentences with list words, studying the meaning of prefix/root/suffix, word search, crossword, etc. There are usually around 15 pages per list & we complete two per day in addition to reviewing vocabulary words. After all the workbook pages for the list are done she takes a test requiring her to spell & define the vocabulary words we selected for that list. She consistently score in the 90% range. I believe this is because Megawords is designed for the student to dissect the words & become confident with one list before moving to the next. I highly recommend Megawords for students who do not have a natural inclination for spelling.
