Part of a four-book series, this Beyond The Code 1 workbook helps students develop important comprehension and thinking skills at the earliest level, and also can be accommodated after having completed Explode The Code Book 1 (sold separately), which follows the same phonetic structure. Content is covered through 3 engaging illustrated stories (which include the titles Zack the Dog, Six Kids Jog, and Help 911), with the following skills addressed in activities that follow each story: spelling patterns, sight words, vocabulary development, sequencing, categorizing, following directions, critical thinking, story recall, inferential thinking, synonyms/antonyms, and matching sentences to pictures. PRODUCT FEATURES
Beyond the Code Book 1 aligns with Explode The Code Book 1 and provides extra critical thinking and reading comprehension instruction along with regular phonics learning
Seven engaging stories help students address and practice skills such as spelling patterns, sight words, following directions, story recall, multi-syllabic words, and much more
Introductory exercises teach word families and vocabulary, while follow-up questions develop students, understanding of the stories and encourage their reasoning abilities
After each story, students can complete illustrations by adding their own drawings for reinforcement
Instructions are simple and written directly to the student, allowing for independent work
PRODUCT INCLUDES:
1 Reading Comprehension/Critical Thinking Workbook for Grades 2 to 4
Finally, the missing link! Reading comprehension and reasoning skills designed to accompany the Explode the Code series. Following and using the same presentation of phonetic structures as Explode the Code, Beyond the Code contains introductory (reading warm-up) exercises, reading selections, and follow-up activities that test understanding and critical thinking. This series is typical of the high quality of EPS products. The stories and exercises look very interesting to young readers. One feature I appreciate is the continuation of a story in several parts which I think would hold the attention of a child better than unrelated shorter stories. Although the publisher states that these two volumes are meant to be used with the first four books of the Explode series, my sample copy of Beyond the Code Book 1 begins with the long vowel constructs introduced in Explode the Code Book 3.
I'd recommend this book for reading comprehension skills.
The stories are fun and the illustrations great and my boys enjoy the Beyond the Code Series. I'd recommend these and Explode the Code for teaching reading and reading comprehension!

Comprehension and Reasoning=VERY good, Stories= Good, Lessons= Could be better!
I have mixed feelings about "Beyond the Code." I adore Explode the Code and and had hope for this supplemental resource. I have had to design supplemental lessons to coordinate to the lessons. Presentation is also lacking.

These books are wonderful! My 6 year old daughter has learned so much from the series She have completed this series in one year I like the questions that go along with the stories they really get the child thinking The books are easy to use however you do need to read the stories in order to correct the questions There is no teacher's guide I feel that these books are an excellent investment

Are you supposed to complete the explode the code series before moving on to beyond the code?
I found the book helpful when used as a supplement to Hooked on Phonics. It was helpful to use as independent work. However, if the lessons were well-understood, I moved ahead. The books are sequential, and the test booklet for level recommendations given at the beginning and end of the year are informative.

is there a teacher guide for this book?
There is no teacher guide for this book that I could find. It was the only downside of the Beyond the Code books, since I had to read the stories myself to find out if my child's answers were correct. But that didn't take too long, and it was good for my student. Otherwise these are great books.
