In Book 4 the family travels through the United States. The twins and friends learn about landmarks, Americas heroes, and work in their garden as they review concepts from Book 3 and do further work with larger numbers, metric measurement, decimals, operations with equivalent fractions, and more. Math Fact Reviews are incorporated into the lessons so that students won't forget foundational math information.

Publisher's Description of Math Lessons for a Living Education: Level 4 with Answer Key

We often tend to compartmentalize subjects when teaching. However, real life doesn't serve up problems or issues in neat, subject-labeled situations! The Math Lessons for a Living Education curriculum teaches math through a blend of stories, copy work, oral narration and hands-on activities, showing how math is used in "real life"---just like a living math book! Thirty-six weeks of instruction guide students through the content, story, and hands-on activities using inexpensive manipulatives provided/made by the parent.

This book is written to be used by teachers and students together. It includes a suggested weekly schedule (30 minutes per lesson, 5 days per week, 36 weeks) with easy-to-manage lessons that include reading, worksheets, and assessments. Pages are perforated and three-hole-punched so that parents can easily tear out, hand-out, and store pages. Students will read the pages in the book and complete the corresponding section provided by the teacher. Assessments are given at regular intervals. Answer keys are available online.

This fourth-grade resource features the continuing story of twins Charlie and Charlotte, who are learning that life is full of learning opportunities! As students read, they'll be drawn into an adventure that teaches them about fractions and geometry, among other skills.

Covering one year of 4th grade math, by the end of the course students will have reviewed what they've learned in previous grades, and learned about new fraction concepts, metric units of measurement, basic geometry, and averaging.

Grade 4. 350 pages. Perfect Bound with Perforated 3-Hole Punched Pages.

Category Description for Math Lessons for a Living Education

What is a living education? A Living Education is the real-life application of the things you learn. When this approach is applied to math, it is not taught in a vacuum; rather, mathematical concepts are integrated into everyday situations. This is the Charlotte Mason approach to education, and Angela O'Dell, author of this curriculum, has captured the spirit of the methodology infusing it with a Christian perspective in this easy-to-use series. Math is taught through the adventures of a brother and sister, Charlie and Charlotte, and their family.

Math Lessons for a Living Education books are designed to be consumable and are not reproducible. For Levels 3-6, Answer Keys are in the back. Answer Keys and additional free Resources and Errata Sheets are available at Master Books.com. Solutions for Level 6 are provided in a separate Teacher Guide. Levels are designed to be one-year courses. Books (Levels 1-5) feature a suggested daily schedule at the beginning with a grid for completion and grading built in. That information is included with the Teacher Guide for Level 6. Although the books are titled as "levels," the levels are loosely based on grade. Even if you haven't used the earlier levels of this series, you can jump in at an appropriate skill level/topical area for your child. If you are unsure about where to begin, you can download a placement test from our website. (Links are with each Level of the series.)

The kindergarten level of this series teaches children basic math skills through stories. Children will learn to count and recognize numbers 0 to 10, develop critical thinking skills, recognize patterns, shapes, concepts of time, and more. There are 36 lessons that take about 30 minutes each day, and you do one lesson per week. Pages are colorful and engaging with friendly little faces throughout the lessons. Worksheets are included and teacher instruction is found on each exercise. Puzzle solutions are found at the back of the book along with practice sheets for numbers and shapes, calendar page, and suggested calendar activities. You have permission to copy these reproducible pages for homeschool use. A materials list and suggested schedule are in the front of the book.

There are no fancy manipulatives for this series - colorful paper versions are printed in the back of each book, and you'll use household or other commonly-found items such as: contact paper, construction paper, large index cards, brass fasteners, crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue, hole punch & reinforcers, flashcard rings, plastic storage box, stickers for flashcards, pictures from old magazines, poster board, 100 counting items (your choice), three containers for making the Place Value Village, and snack-size/1-quart/1-gallon resealable bags. In Books 2 and 3, you will also need a 12" ruler, indoor/outdoor thermometer, coins for money lessons, and $1 bills. Book 4 requires poster board, a box of business size envelopes, folder for charts, small counting items, and modeling clay. To get started, simply cut out the manipulatives found in the back of your book and prepare them before the first lesson.

New to the series and not yet available for all grade levels are the Practice Makes Perfect workbooks. These colorful but non-reproducible books provide quizzes along with the practice worksheets. Answer/Solutions are in the back of the book.

Whether you are using the Charlotte Mason approach or just attracted to the simplicity of the courses, this series provides a solid introduction to math. Non-reproducible, over 300 perforated and 3-hole punched pages each, sc. ~ Donna

A good choice for math
My 4th grader is enjoying this as his main math book this year. Rainbow Resources shipped quickly and has good deals. Will definitely look to order from them again.

I fun and well written math curriculum
I love how this math book is arranged. It's not overly redundant so it gives some good variety to keep my kid interested and challenged but it does still work on mastery. The story problems and examples are wholesome and applicable to life as well. We are really liking this math curriculum

I love the story that goes along with the lessons. The lessons are broken up to easily understand and helps them stick in my sons brain.

Perfect curriculum for my 4th grader that struggles in math. He has made a lot of progress and his confidence in his math skills is growing. We plan on using this curriculum each year.

Not very satisfied
I sincerely appreciate the Christian perspective, but I don't feel this is a very solid math program. My daughter loves that there are stories to read in her math book, but personally I don't find the stories at all helpful for MATH, which is what I would think stories in a math book would be! There are a very few math concepts dropped into the stories, but the stories don't really teach or reinforce the math concepts. While the stories reinforce Christian values, the writing is not that great. Also, I am disappointed with the lack of drill and reinforcement. Sometimes there are maybe three problems on a page with a large white space at the bottom and I wonder "Why aren't there more problems for her to do?!" I have felt like I had to supplement by printing worksheets off for my daughter to do. I do not plan to continue with this series.

So far so good!
After struggling in Math last year, we switched my 4th grade daughter to Math Lessons for a Living Education. We really enjoy the short story at the beginning of each week's lesson. It helps keep her interest in Math and has led to some great cross curriculum conversations. If you're looking for a lot of practice/repition, you'll probably need supplemental materials.

Overall a good textbook.
My daughter does not enjoy math in general. She likes this textbook because it is very straightforward. She enjoys the stories/setting for the problems. The religious themes are sometimes more conservative than I am and traditional gender roles are reinforced through the stories. This isnt a problem for us because my daughter is learning that different families have their own beliefs and values that sometimes don’t match ours exactly.

Can't settle for less
After doing Saxon Math we can't settle for less. I bought this book based on good reviews from this and multiple other websites. Although, I absolutely love that it's a Christian Math book and they're not afraid to speak of God. But the lesson stories have no correlation with the actual work that they're doing, new concepts are randomly thrown in. My son is in 3rd grade, last year we did Saxon Math 3, although he excelled in math K, 1st and 2nd grade I wanted something less intensive this year due to our circumstances but this book brought so much frustration to both him and me, we just simply can't go on. Going back to my old and faithful Saxon Math but ONLY first or second edition. Notice the 3rd edition has been edited "dumbed" down to fit the common core standards for public schools.

Why did you choose this?

I used the previous three lesson manuals and this program works well for my daughter who is an independent worker. I still explain concepts to her, but she is able to do all the practice work herself.…

I am looking for a gentler approach to math in our home learning environment and have good reviews of this curriculum.

Looking for a fun and practical math curriculum to use for summer.

ready for this level

Has anyone used the master books academy videos with the elementary math curriculum?  Was it helpful, and was your child able to be independent with it?

Sorry, we have never used the videos but definitely love the books!!!

Is the level 4 written so that the student can work independently?  I have read that there aren’t examples in the text on how to solve the problems and also that there is no teaching instruction.

This book is written to be used by teachers and students together. Do I need a student book/workbook per child? I have two in 4th grade.

Yes, there is no other way as the lessons (think 'textbook') and worksheets are all incorporated together. So you need one for each child. The nice thing is that they are taught directly to the child :)

How long does a lesson take each day? Can i do a longer lesson once a week and just guide them through some practice the rest of the week?

The lessons are pretty quick and it depends on if there is an accompanying story for that day. You can make it as long or as short as you 'd like! Remember curriculum is a tool for you to use as you like, no need to follow it exactly. You are in control of the curriculum, it is not in control of you! :)
