Category Description for Math Lessons for a Living Education

What is a living education? A Living Education is the real-life application of the things you learn. When this approach is applied to math, it is not taught in a vacuum; rather, mathematical concepts are integrated into everyday situations. This is the Charlotte Mason approach to education, and Angela O'Dell, author of this curriculum, has captured the spirit of the methodology infusing it with a Christian perspective in this easy-to-use series. Math is taught through the adventures of a brother and sister, Charlie and Charlotte, and their family.

Math Lessons for a Living Education books are designed to be consumable and are not reproducible. For Levels 3-6, Answer Keys are in the back. Answer Keys and additional free Resources and Errata Sheets are available at Master Books.com. Solutions for Level 6 are provided in a separate Teacher Guide. Levels are designed to be one-year courses. Books (Levels 1-5) feature a suggested daily schedule at the beginning with a grid for completion and grading built in. That information is included with the Teacher Guide for Level 6. Although the books are titled as "levels," the levels are loosely based on grade. Even if you haven't used the earlier levels of this series, you can jump in at an appropriate skill level/topical area for your child. If you are unsure about where to begin, you can download a placement test from our website. (Links are with each Level of the series.)

The kindergarten level of this series teaches children basic math skills through stories. Children will learn to count and recognize numbers 0 to 10, develop critical thinking skills, recognize patterns, shapes, concepts of time, and more. There are 36 lessons that take about 30 minutes each day, and you do one lesson per week. Pages are colorful and engaging with friendly little faces throughout the lessons. Worksheets are included and teacher instruction is found on each exercise. Puzzle solutions are found at the back of the book along with practice sheets for numbers and shapes, calendar page, and suggested calendar activities. You have permission to copy these reproducible pages for homeschool use. A materials list and suggested schedule are in the front of the book.

There are no fancy manipulatives for this series - colorful paper versions are printed in the back of each book, and you'll use household or other commonly-found items such as: contact paper, construction paper, large index cards, brass fasteners, crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue, hole punch & reinforcers, flashcard rings, plastic storage box, stickers for flashcards, pictures from old magazines, poster board, 100 counting items (your choice), three containers for making the Place Value Village, and snack-size/1-quart/1-gallon resealable bags. In Books 2 and 3, you will also need a 12" ruler, indoor/outdoor thermometer, coins for money lessons, and $1 bills. Book 4 requires poster board, a box of business size envelopes, folder for charts, small counting items, and modeling clay. To get started, simply cut out the manipulatives found in the back of your book and prepare them before the first lesson.

New to the series and not yet available for all grade levels are the Practice Makes Perfect workbooks. These colorful but non-reproducible books provide quizzes along with the practice worksheets. Answer/Solutions are in the back of the book.

Whether you are using the Charlotte Mason approach or just attracted to the simplicity of the courses, this series provides a solid introduction to math. Non-reproducible, over 300 perforated and 3-hole punched pages each, sc. ~ Donna

Great math program, high quality
Our family loves Everyday Math for a Living Education. It's a high-quality production and children can lead themselves through it once they're reading. Lessons are clearly laid out so either my husband or I (or sometimes grandparents!) can pick up the book and teach with minimal prep work.

Not overwhelming!
Very nice, all you need is in one book.
If your child likes to read stories they’ll enjoy it.
If you have to read the stories to them, than you may
not enjoy it as the kids may not listen to the stories
And get bored. The stories have little details that can be annoying if you are a “get to the point” person. The 4th grade book has answer key errors.
The fifth grade one doesn’t yet as I know. I like it for one child. Eventually for the other.

Good, but lacking!
Good for supplement, but is lacking in-depth mastering of concepts. Very little conceptual understanding exercises. For the price, it's a great extra. But I wouldn't consider it a full curriculum.

Far too simple and too many typos
This curriculum falls behind grade level. It does not explain topics thoroughly and is far too easy compared to other curriculum choices. It also has too many typos.

Repeated Typos lost our trust
We've been using this curriculum for three-quarters of the year now, but yesterday decided to finally give it up after finding THREE misprints in the problems on a single page. Not misprints in the directions, the actual problems had incorrect numbers in them. My son spent a lot of frustrated time trying to figure out how to do the problems and eventually I checked the answer key and realized they had misprinted the problem and it was unsolvable as stated. This has happened to us on several previous occasions as well, and I find that unacceptable in a math curriculum. In other curriculums, if we couldn't get the answer the first time, I would push us through and we would keep working at it until we did. With this one, my first instinct is to assume the publisher got it wrong. I don't like that feeling. We will not be continuing with this curriculum for that reason.

I will say that what I did like about the curriculum was that it was very gentle and had very short lessons that my son could mostly do independently, which was nice for me when I had to work with other children. It was almost too gentle, however, and I worry that we may have lost ground this year and not gotten through enough material to have him ready for 6th grade. Copywork in math was an interesting idea, and it did cause my son to think about the concept while he was writing it out, but sometimes the copywork was VERY long and took over half the page. When the math lesson is only one page anyway, I wished that there had been more time on practicing the concept by working the problems, rather than doing copywork. I'm glad we tried this curriculum, but won't be continuing with it.

Practical
My 4th grade daughter is enjoying this book. She is quick with math, and this book's short lessons are very easy for her. The introductions are not as thorough as Saxon's, however, the work is not as tedious, either (but I also appreciate Saxon very much). We switched from Saxon because I wanted to slow down the "get ahead in math" war that was happening in our house and slow down to see God in math and daily life. This curriculum is helping us with that!

Great curriculum
I LOVE Math Lessons for a Living Education. However, I couldn't give this book all 5 stars. It's not because of the program itself (love the program), but because of the actual book. The pages are very thin and you can actually see the backside on the front side. Also, the pages are perforated, but not very well. When I ripped out the pages for our first week I tore almost all of them. And since the paper is thin it rips very easily. From now on I will probably just cut the pages out. I have the old versions on my phone, but purchased the book for convenience. If I knew the pages were going to be the way they are, I may have just printed them out myself.

Love this book
I love the story and making math relevant and interesting. There are quite a few editing errors in the new version, but that's not a big deal.

Why did you choose this?

My son loves Masterbooks! It gives enough that he learns, but not so much seatwork that he gets overwhelmed.

We first bought book 4 and we love it. We are almost finished book 4 and wanted to continue with this math curriculum.

My son was becoming frustrated that his math lesson was too many pages. We are finishing up CLE level 3 and when we are done with that, he can transition into Level 5 of Math Lessons for a Living…

next in the series for my homeschooler

Is the answer key in the back of the textbook? Or is the teacher manual required? My daughter is interested in this as a supplement to our beloved Beast Academy.

Yes, the answer key is in the back of the textbook. The teacher manual is not required; the book does a good job of explaining the material to the student. Also, the pages are perforated so you can remove the answer key in you prefer (that's what we did).

I just need to know if this book has religious content? I want this series regardless but I need the information.

The beginning of each lesson is a continuing story of a Christian family and their missionary work in Peru. The family of five are all traveling to Peru to help at an orphanage. They talk about praying, bible studies, God, and Jesus. So to answer your question...Yes.
