Description

Created by a dad and perfected by a team of teachers, this fast-paced, farm-themed card game takes the chore out of reading practice. Work on phonics sounds from short vowels to blends and digraphs, and more. Each player starts with seven cards. On your turn, read aloud the card that's face up. Select a matching card from your hand, repeat the sound you're matching and its location (beginning, middle, or end). To win, be the first to get rid of your cards. The style of play reminds me of Uno®. Make sure you play the special action cards (Leap Frog; Turn Around; Draw 1; Change vowel) to keep the play “Crazy!" From Level 2, each word card includes a farmer-provided sentence (small print at bottom), providing in-context reading—watch out for rhymes and ‘dad puns': “I don't like to brag, but my chicken won the good egg award;" “My New Year's goal is to learn how to bowl." Card levels follow a phonetic progression. As your skills progress, move to the next level or intermix the levels: Level 1 (CVC); Level 2 (beginning blends, short vowels); Level 3 (ending blends, short vowels); Level 4 (digraphs); Level 5 (silent “e" and long vowels); Level 6 (vowel digraphs and y). Alternate play options available on publisher's website. Permits 2-8 players, with an average play time of 10 minutes. ~ Ruth

Publisher's Description of Crazy A's Reading Game (Levels 1-6)

Crazy A's is a phonics game played similarly to the card game, Crazy 8's. Players match vowels and consonant sounds from their hand to the play pile to develop important reading skills, while having fun. It was originally created by our dad and perfected by Matthew Rivaldi and a team of teachers. Our latest edition, released in 2019, includes updated artwork by Arne Ratermanis and reconfiguration of the levels to be consistent with current teaching standards. Previous editions were Crazy A's and Whizizzle Phonics, produced by Wiggity Bang Games. There are six levels that teach a different phonics concept.

Level 1 Short vowel consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words ("a" in "cat").

Level 2 Combine consonant sounds for beginning blends ("sp" on "spit") with short vowels.

Level 3 Combine consonant sounds for ending blends ("nd" on "mend") with short vowels.

Level 4 Combine letters to make single sounds, called digraphs ("th" on "that").

Level 5 Long vowel sounds ("a-e" in "game") with "silent-e"words.

Level 6 Vowel brothers ( "oa" in "soap") and the "Y" as an "I" sound ("sky ").

There are fun action cards such as "leap frog" or "change the vowel" to keep the play exciting.
