Game Changer
I made the difficult decision to change math curriculum mid year but knew it was the right choice when I received Horizons Math. The areas where my child was struggling, he is now flourishing! He loves doing math every day and really looks forward to working on the problems. He's also reading more because he wants to do everything in his lesson, and that's amazing, too!! Beyond pleased and so thankful for this curriculum. Thank you so much!!

Great Math for New or Experienced Homeschoolers
We love Horizons Math! My mom used it on me, my sister uses it for her two girls, and I'm using it for my son. We all love it! Little to no prep work or experience required.

Great Choice!
We used the Horizons K curriculum last year and had great success with it. But, this year I decided to switch over to a mastery program and purchased something else instead. It did NOT work for our family and our daughter struggled through the other curriculum for the first half of the year. I purchased the Horizons 1 Math curriculum and she immediately dove back into it. She enjoys the repetition and concepts offered together in the spiral approach, as well as the colorful graphics. I especially enjoy the teacher's manual because it tells me all that I need to know to help her succeed!

Horizons Math has been a great fit for my children who are advanced in math! I really liked that there is a placement test available which can be downloaded from the publisher's website or purchased from Rainbow [Ed Note: Placement tests are also downloadable from the Rainbow website: http://wwwrainbowresourcecom/searchspringphp?q=math+placement+tests] I found Horizons to be advanced in content level introducing concepts more quickly than some other mainstream curriculum While this may be a negative for some children for children who do well in math it's a big plus as it provides more challenge I like the balance of drill/memory work and use of manipulatives for teaching and practicing concepts The worksheets are colorful and provide a lot of practice in several different concepts which helps keep math interesting From a teacher's perspective I felt that the teacher book was thorough You will have to teach as instruction is not included on the student page but the workbook pages (shrunken) and test keys are included in the teacher's manual You can photocopy included review pages if your student needs extra work on a particular concept I liked the option to purchase the box set & save a little money Saving money is always a plus

I loved the Horizons Math program and we are going to try doing a few of the other subjects offered next year The program was easy to use and understand The way that they reinforce concepts throughout the program was awesome and it gave my son confidence to do most of it on his own It does take a lot of time at first but once they get the idea they truly flourish with this program It also is very affordable and you can get by without the teachers guide I never picked mine up

We just switched to Horizons Mathematics last month after using another math program My son was becoming very frustrated with the other program and I knew that I had to do something I absolutely love Horizons mathematics and so does my son He no longer dreads Math time and is excited each day to do his work He has never been a big workbook kind of kid but really likes the colorful student workbooks and likes to do them The teacher's guide is wonderful and I have no prep time It is very easy to follow and takes you step by step through each section of his work each day telling you exactly what to say to help the student learn each concept The price is very reasonable and I love that Rainbow put together the maniputlative kit to order to supplement this program I was able to make a math tote and each day when it is time for math we grab our books get out the tote of manipulatives and we are ready to go My 4 year old daughter loves to join us for manipulative time and she is learning so much from hearing the explanations to her brother Thanks Rainbow for carrying this product and for being such a wonderful resource for Homeschooling Families

My kids LOVE Horizons Math! I started my 1st and kindergartner on this program and we're about 1/3 of the way through the first books We got both the K and 1st grade levels and although they are somewhat challenging for them they keep their interest The pages are colorful and interesting and my kids now enjoy doing math something my daughter was good at but didn't enjoy doing before Now they both open their math books and get started without my help At this level the kids can't work completely independently however I first began by using the teacher's guide as a step-by-step manual to teaching math That's one option but as we've progressed I use the teacher's manual as more of a reference than a script It is worth buying though Some of the lessons between grades K and 1 overlap thematically although the difficulty level varies This makes it easy to to multi-level teaching (ie place value) and vary only the problem difficulty not the topic I highly recommend Horizons math I also recommend taking their placement test first to ensure that you're placing your child in the correct grade level

I love Horizons Math! We are using level K for my kindergartner and my 1st grader is using level 1 I love the review and my older daughter really does well with it It is broken down into small sections which makes her feel more successful and not overwhelmed by large numbers of problems My younger daughter with a smaller attention span also does well with the small sections as it allows her to not linger on any one topic for too long We plan to continue on with Horizons next year as well I believe it is an excellent value for the quality of instruction received

My child who is good at math did well with this program though his fact recall was still weak The colorful workbook pages are laid out very nice and I liked the spiral review but there were often too many problems (I'd cross out about 1/3) It was not the program for my child with learning disabilities and after I switched him to RightStart I switched everyone I still use this program as a supplement for my daughter if she gets ahead in the other programit requires very little of me which is nice

9 Questions
Why did you choose this?

Homeschooling daughter.

this is curriculum that I use and I like it

Effective!

Using this in our homeschool co-op.

my son has adhd and anxiety. right now he is enrolled in public school but would like to teach him at home. would this be a good curriculum for him?

My daughter with ADD did ok with it if I made the problems into games. I might look into a curriculum with games built in so you didn't have to think so hard as a parent. I do think this curriculum is fantastic, just maybe not as interactive as a child with ADD/ADHD may need.

Is the TM spiral bound?

No. They come as a big thick book. I take the manuals an spiral bind them.

Does it align to common core? What would you say are some strengths and weaknesses? I'm having difficulty choosing from Horizons, Go math and Math Mammoth so I'm trying to weight words of wisdom as I pray and ask God for His leading. Thanks for your help

Horizons was published before Common Core and has not been revised to align to CC. However, it is a fast-paced curriculum that provides excellent coverage of math basics and possibly meets and exceeds CC. Strengths include balanced instruction and practice, a colorful workbook, "just-enough" teacher's manual, and fast pacing. It's only weakness (in my opinion) is less emphasis on problem solving skills and critical thinking than some math curricula.

Do you need manipulative's?

I have found that having the manipulatives in a boxed set has been very helpful. We have used the same set for the past three years. The convenience of not having to collect items for each lesson (if purchased separately) has been very nice. I also like that is has been used multiple years.

Are there assessment tests included?

No, they are located here on the website, I can not include a link, but if you type in on Google "assessment test for horizons math pdf" it is the first link! Or you can purchase at the product I recommended. Hope this helps,

Do you think the layout and instructions are easy for children to understand?

Yes, but children learn to read from grades K-3 and then transfer from that to reading to learn, and therefore I would still make sure you are reading the instructions to them. 1 out of 4 of my children could read on his own, but he is an exceptional student.

Is the TM necessary? What is in it other than the answers?

Teachers Manual has extra practice sheets, answers, and gives excerckses to do with student prior to the workbook pages. I didn’t use all those every lesson with Horizons 1 so for Horizons 2 I didn’t purchase the TM.

Do I also need to order the loose leaf worksheets?

The loose leaf worksheets are printed copies of masters that are provided in the Teacher's Manual. It is not necessary to purchase the worksheets. Some people choose to not use them at all while others just copy them from the TM. However, we do carry the print copies for those who do not wish to print their own but who want to use them.
