This book by Michael Driscoll introduces young students to poetry and famous poets in a way they will find interesting and fun. The first part of the book describes the various types of poetry like nursery rhymes, villanelle, limerick, narrative verse, ballad, sonnet, free verse, and more. Each type of poem is described quickly and clearly, and then the book contains famous examples of that type of poem. Kids can either read the poems themselves, or play the accompanying downloadable audio (located online) when prompted. The digital audio files include all of the poems in the book read alternately by a man and a woman with pleasant voices. Colorful boxes tell readers when to play an audio track, as well as sharing extra information about the poems or their authors. "Words for the Wise" boxes are included on each page, defining words in the poems that children may not be familiar with. "If You're a Poet, You Should Know It" boxes are also included throughout the book, with vocabulary words related to poetry defined (like stanza, alliteration, etc.). After all the types of poetry are introduced, explained, and exampled, the second half of the book is dedicated to famous poets. A quick biography of each poet is included and then excerpts from that person's poetry are shared. These excerpts (sometimes full poems) are also included on the audio files. Text boxes on the pages give a summary of the poems and explain confusing parts. Fun, colorful, little drawings accompany these poems (as well as those earlier in the book) and add to the charm of the book. Homer, Shakespeare, Blake, Dickinson, Kipling, Sandburg, Heaney, Angelou, and many more are included in this section of the book. Overall, 64 famous poems are included in the book (and on the downloadable audio files). With the easy-to-understand explanations and numerous examples, young students will be grasping and enjoying poetry in no time. I am so pleased with this poetry book and CD for my elementary kids When they were younger introducing them to nursery rhymes and rhythmic books was easy and fun enough Beyond the 'little kid' stuff my own experience with middle and high school poetry is one of confusion I don't want my kids to be afraid of trying to understand a poem or get overly frustrated in analysis before they get a chance to marvel at great poetry I want them to enjoy it! I want them to hear it properly and passionately spoken! Because of my own background and how handicapped I felt when trying to read poetry I chose this because it comes with a CD to help us in our process It allows us to easily listen over and over again in the car I am finding a new appreciation for poetry! Now that I've become familiar with the more difficult poems I can confidently read them aloud! Even so each time I listen to the CD again I notice something new Some of the longer poems such as The Pied Piper of Hamelin and The Raven are not recorded in their entirety but a narrator fills in the parts of the story that are missing Feeling like I understood the gist of those poems I was excited to then look up the rest of the text on-line and challenge myself to read it! Aside from my own growth the kids ask to listen to the CD and they laugh or ask questions about the poems I hear them mumbling what they remember to themselves for fun at other times of the day! The hard cover book is beautifully illustrated and includes information about the poets themselves types of poetry and vocabulary words There is such a great variety: short long serious funny simple and complex My only side note is that there are some 'dark' poems and passionate references to 'the devil' which may bother some families If a poem bothers me or one of my kids we talk about it and then skip it in the future I can safely say the whole family has painlessly learned and grown through this!

Used it as a group lesson once a week Have Prek 2nd 6th and 8th grader boys Poetry covers all ages touches on a wide variety of styles Good overview of the subject CD is nice addition Someone else can read the poems so I can enjoy listening too
