The third book (Transition) reviews manuscript for 35 pages

Publisher's Description of Pentime Transition Grade 2
Second grade starts in practicing manuscript with numbers, letters, words, and sentences. Shortly before midterm they start learning cursive, beginning with letters. moving on to words, and finally sentences.
This program is designed to teach children handwriting with a minimum of assistance. Eight black and white workbooks help students master the skill of manuscript writing, transition into cursive, and continue to build cursive skills using smaller and smaller lines. In the first workbook, students focus on writing the individual letters on wide lines with a dotted midline. The correct strokes are shown (and numbered) for each letter along with plenty of space for children to practice. The second book continues practice of upper and lowercase letters but adds words and sentences as well. In place of stroke guides, a dot on each letter shows children where to start forming the letter. The third book (Transition) reviews manuscript for 35 pages and then jumps into cursive handwriting for the remaining 60 pages of the book, where students learn the strokes for individual cursive letters and practice connecting them. The rest of the series allows children to fully master cursive writing as they continually practice by writing the letters and copying longer and longer paragraphs on increasingly smaller lines (rulings gradually decrease from 1/2" in Grade 3 to 5/16" in Grade 8). Paragraphs range from fun sentences to Bible verses (close to the ASV version) to excerpts from essays on nature. Captions in the older grades provide interesting facts, and pretty border sheets to color are scattered throughout. - Steph
Both of my kids, ages 8 and 10, are using the Pentime books. In one semester they learned cursive. My 10 year old started in level 3 and my 8 year old started in level 2. I youngest skipped manuscript section and went straight to cursive. I'm happy with he results.

Excellent Transition for Writing
I have used this penmanship curriculum for six children now. With the exception of the one still doing the Manuscript Level, all have made the transition from Manuscript to Cursive beautifully. Reading in cursive doesn't happen as quickly, but they do fully grasp it by Level 4 or 5. I highly recommend this curriculum, no complaints.

Wonderful!
These books are all wonderful! The concepts and how they teach penmanship. I just wish the backs were made better as the staples easily tear out of the backs. But wide tape easily solves that problem.

Kids love this
My girls have really enjoyed this work book, I love the cursive font that they are taught, the little connect the dots at the top of each page makes for a fun change of pace too. I love that it teaches the loops and what I think of as a bit more classical look but Kayes our well for kids.

Great for transition writers
I homeschool and have 2 students that needed extra printing practice before starting penmanship, this book is the perfect balance.

I have been raving about Pentime to everyone who asks me about handwriting/cursive programs. So now my friend is throwing her order in with mine. :)
Brittany G
Straightforward, inexpensive handwriting curriculum with interesting passages to copy and cute illustrations.

Does this follow the Zaner-Bloser formation style? Or is it a style all its own?
Veronica M
It is a style all its own. My children follow the D’Nealian style, but once they learned cursive, the Pentime cursive books are really wonderful.

Are these available as PDF?
We only offer the print edition. You might check with the publisher to see if a pdf is available.

How many lessons does this have in it?
It is broken into lessons, each one being two pages in length. The level’s average 70-80 pages per book, or 35-40 lessons, with Level 2 having almost 96 pages. I have my children do one full page per day to make them last longer, and because they’d likely undertake some kind of mutiny if I had them do the full two. =)

Can I use the transition book for an older student that hasn't learned cursive?
Yes, but half the book is printing practice. Since it is an inexpensive book, this should not be too much of an issue. I like the old-school style of cursive (initial loops on capitals, traditional style capital F, T, Q, Z unlike some of these "simplified" modern cursive styles). For some reason, they don't have practice with letter element strokes until near the end of the book (starting on p. 75) I would do the stroke practice pages first. The thing I don't like about this book is that it does not give sufficient practice with each letter (esp. capitals) before moving on to the next. I ended up getting a blank notebook with the wide lines and dotted line in the middle, and assigning additional practice until I felt each letter was mastered, and he could competently connect it to other letters in his spelling words. We also use the Zaner-Bloser cursive books - not as traditional, but very methodical and well-organized.
