Galloping the Globe
Learning new things is easier for young students when tied into a common theme. That's why unit studies are so popular and successful. So what about Galloping the Globe? It's a unit study centered around geography. It encourages a detailed look at a selection of countries from the six populated continents, as well as the North and South Poles. This study also looks at Christmas around the world. Using the countries being studied geographically as the basic platform, the authors have included ideas, references, projects, and activities for integrating Bible, people/history, science, literature, vocabulary, internet sources, maps & flags, cooking, music/art, games, puzzles, and crafts into the curriculum. An aspect to this unit study that is similar to the TrailGuide To... series is the student notebook approach, where the child will produce a notebook full of art projects, reports, biographies, geographic dictionary pages, and much more. This is intended to be something they can show to other people, reinforcing and reviewing what they have learned as they explain various facts to friends and family. This is a fairly flexible course, with a suggested sample schedule of studying one country a week or every two weeks. While geography is the main focus of this unit study, the course does a good job of including the resources needed to study the other subjects, too. Answers are included and the consumable work pages are reproducible (and are also downloadable using the QR code in the back of the book, which makes it even easier to use with multiple children). Some of the recommended websites and book suggestions might be out of print or no longer available; however, these are only suggestions and in most sections there are more books suggested than necessary. A list of the core resources used throughout the course is found in the front of the book and is also listed below. 266 pgs, pb. ~ Zach
Core resources:
Considering God’s Creation (available from Eagle’s Wings)
Our Father’s World by Rod and Staff (SKU # ORFTWD)
Missionary Stories with the Millers

Usborne Internet-Linked Science Encyclopedia
Zoo Guide (available from Answers in Genesis)
Aquarium Guide (available from Answers in Genesis)

It's...not what I'd hoped. Notebooking pp are not really worth money, in my opinion. I'd just as soon grab paper and move on. The activities are primarily NOT geography related (science instead) and are too childish for my K'er--to the point that after printing the first set, I was more annoyed w the waste of paper than anything. Not even busy work--they're too easy to take time.
If you're a first-time hs'er, there are worse programs to splurge on, but if you're on a budget (who isn't?)--you can safely skip this temptation.
Nope! The work pages are all printed inside the book, but there is also a cd. Pop that into your computer and print out however many work pages you want! The cd also has a few extra pages, like for notebooks or lapbooks about each country, but my students are too young for that. If your kids are older, those pages are nice.
It depends on how you are going to teach it. The book itself has very little instruction about each country, only maps and worksheets like search a word or crossword puzzles or country info sheets to fill out. In each country section, there is a pretty exhaustive list of books and/or online resources to teach about that country in the different content areas. So, for example, you can teach about China: geography, history, literature, language arts, science, Bible, holidays and celebrations, and travel/tourism. For each of these areas there is a list of resources you can get info from. I suppose you could use your local public library. There is a "core book list" at the very beginning of the book, but I have none of those. The Activity CD I'd just the worksheets from the book, plus notebooking pages if you do country notebooks,so that you ddon't have to use or copy the pages from the book. You can print them from your computer. Overall, the book offers complete freedom in how to teach the content. However, if you (like me) do not have time to go to the library and search for specific books or the time to create sample notebook pages for a kindergarten student to follow, this book may not be for you. The instructional text is very sparse--only a paragraph or two about each country, and you have to go find the "history science, literature, recipes, games" that are listed on the front. I was excited to get it, but I'm not really impressed. I am making it work because I don't want to hunt for something else at this point, but it is not what I thought it would be.
This looked like the type of Geography curriculum that would fit my style of homeschooling with lots of littles.
Excited to try this with my 2nd and 3rd graders this year!
Looked simple and easy to use, and like it would be engaging for a first grader
I like that this appears to provide instruction on cultural awareness and orientation within our social world in addition to geography. In my state, homeschoolers are required to instruct in…
