There are 36 lessons in this workbook. Lessons 1–34 have 10 list words each, and lessons 35–36 have 15 list words each. Starting in lesson 17, the list of words is written in both manuscript and cursive type. Each lesson starts with an engaging and informative reading selection that illustrates the spelling words in context. Spelling tips follow and offer strategies and clues for learning the words. Spelling practice pages give students an opportunity to practice writing new words while reinforcing the spelling pattern. The activity pages give students the chance to practice words in different contexts. Five additional bonus words are given at the end of each lesson, more challenging words with similar spelling patterns. These words are not tested. Lessons 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 are review lessons, covering material from the lessons prior. The end of the student book includes a comprehensive dictionary of all the words used in this level, plus the bonus words. This workbook is consumable, and the lines are ½” tall with a dotted line in the middle. 192 pgs, pb. ~Amber

Category Description for Spelling Workout (2001 Edition)

Spelling Workout is a research-based workbook series for grades K to 8. It takes a phonetic approach in the lower levels and a structural approach in the upper levels to teach spelling. Each level includes 36 lessons. Level A has 6–8 words per list, Level B has 10–15, Level C has 15–20, and Levels D–H have 20, grouped by a common feature such as a rule, pattern, or origin. Students practice using these words through a variety of activities, puzzles, and cross-curricular reading passages that show the words in context. Spelling Workout correlates closely to MCP Phonics, although both programs are complete within themselves and can be used independently.

Student Workbooks are consumable, and in Levels A–F, lessons begin with a short passage to hook the reader. In Levels G–H, the passage is omitted and replaced with an etymology section, which exposes students to word origins and word histories while increasing vocabulary. Word lists and spelling tips follow, then practice activities. Activities include crossword puzzles, riddles, and games to motivate students by making learning fun. After the activities, spelling and writing practice encourages students to apply the list words in different contexts. There are proofreading selections and writing prompts to help make connections between spelling and everyday writing. An interesting point: word lists are only in print type in only Level A. Levels B and C show the word lists in both print and cursive type. Levels D and beyond show the list only in cursive. A cumulative review comes up every five lessons. The end of each student workbook includes a student dictionary of all the words in that level.

Teacher Editions include pre-test dictation sentences, spelling strategies, teaching notes, spelling and writing suggestions, and answers to the student workbook. (I like the idea of a student checking their own work in the TE and then bringing it to you for discussion.) Correlated phonics lessons to MCP Phonics (Plaid Phonics) are included with each spelling lesson, should you choose to use them together for Levels A–F.

Packages with both the student and teacher books are available for your convenience.

Spelling Workout is one of those programs that is not-too-this and not-too-that. The number of words and exercises are just right for many students. Don’t be fooled into thinking this series is “old-fashioned” because of the 2001 copyright. The reading passages are varied and engaging. The word lists are carefully selected. And your student will likely appreciate that the levels are A, B, C, etc. rather than grade 1, 2, 3, etc. if they are working a bit below their grade level.

I love it as a supplement to our regular ELA curriculum. It really helps my 1st grader (who reads at a second grade level) with being able to spell words that he otherwise reads fine but doesn't always spell correctly when doing writing assignments. It's not his favorite thing to do ( no surprise as he doesn't like most seated work) but the lessons are short and simple and he has already improved and has only completed two lessons.

I regret to say I was very disappointed with this program I don't know if it's because I didn't get the teacher's manual but I didn't see any basic spelling tests in it but it did have tests like "find the misspelled word" I'm more traditional when it comes to spelling and found this to be more of a supplemental program instead of a learning how to spell the words on the word list I bought this program because my kids are doing great with MCP's phonics and math which are excellent and goes at their pace

We took a year off from Spelling Workout and tried a few other programs that I kept hearing recommended We are back to it this year! My daughters love doing the lessons and I love that it is based on phonics rules I think it is perfect for a child who learned to read without a lot of phonics instruction I really like that it incorporates other skills like editing also My daughters have two very different learning styles yet it works with both of them I don't use the Teacher's Manual and I find it very simple to use; we just open the book and do the lesson

Why did you choose this?

This series was recommended in the book The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at home.

Because we are working through Level A and enjoying it.

I used these books for my eldest son and have lately been using Memoria Press Traditional Spelling for my youngest. I am returning to these Spelling Workout books because I think they offer a more…

My 6 year old daughter finished Spelling workout A in a about 2 months so we are moving on. Why wait.

Does this program have a placement test?

To my knowledge, no. I feel that the books are very grade/age-appropriate. If you aren't sure from which spelling level your child would benefit, then I would choose the spelling book that correlates with your child's reading level, so as not to frustrate or bore him/her. However, please note that as the levels increase, so do the number of words. For example, there are 6 words in a list in level A, 10-15 in B, 20 in C and up. Hope this helps!
