Publisher's Description of Mystery of History Volume I Creation to Resurrection Third Edition

Introducing The Mystery of History, Volume I in an engaging NEW FORMAT! Our 3rd edition of this beloved history curriculum will now look like Volumes III and IV, with a beautiful full-color hardback Student Reader and an improved Companion Guide. As with Volume IV, a download code for a free digital copy of the new Companion Guide will be included in the Student Reader. The Mystery of History, Volume I is written from a Christian, young-earth, perspective, teaching children to see Gods hand throughout history and how the Gospel of Jesus is the mystery behind all of history! Written in a conversational style, many lessons are presented in the form of mini-biographies, integrating fascinating stories with the events of the time. Covering creation to the resurrection, this curriculum is arranged by quarters and weeks; each quarter begins with an Around the World summary of events to introduce the time period; lessons progress chronologically, with each week having 3 lessons, a pretest, review activities (including Memory Cards), and exercise or quiz. This book integrates the text with write-in activity pages. These activity pages are reproducible for in-family use, or students can write directly on the worksheets.

The Student Reader contains 108 exciting lessons in a colorful, easy-to-hold hardback. Divided into 36 weeks, the reader is a standalone world history text for all ages to enjoy. But for those who wish to delve deeper, we have included a download code in each book for a digital version of The Mystery of History Companion Guide, Volume I. The reproducible resources of the Companion Guide, also written by Linda Lacour Hobar, contain familiar and popular components of The Mystery of History series: pretests; hands-on activities and research projects for younger, middle, and older students; memory card ideas; bi-weekly quizzes and exercises; timeline helps; maps; supplemental book lists; and more.

Written for 4th- to 5th-grade reading level for independent reading. However, as a read-aloud, family study, or classroom program, The Mystery of History can accommodate grades 1-12.

What's New?

New hardcover binding

Beautiful full color imagery

Updated digital Companion Guide containing all student pages, learning aids, and teacher resources

Learning ancient history from a Bible-centered perspective is still the focus of the 3rd edition of Mystery of History, Vol. 1 However, with the 3rd edition, the format has been updated to be similar to Vol. IV. The biggest change is that it is changing from a paperback book to a hardcover with full color illustrations.  Short, interesting readings show how history fits together. What famous Bible figure lived when the Trojan Horse was built? Who lived in North America around the time that Jeremiah wrote Lamentations? Historically accurate with better chronological detail based on the work of James Ussher, the book tells you who walked the earth when and helps put each life in perspective around important events that happened worldwide. Mapping exercises with answers and simplified timeline directions are included along with suggestions for fun activities. Quarterly reviews and semester tests are provided. All student materials is reproducible for family use. Although this is intended for 4-8 graders, it is easily adapted to both older and younger students for an all-in-one history book. Assignments are included for all grade levels.

Purchase of the hardcover Student Text includes a digital access code to download the Companion Guide. This guide includes PDF files of all of the reproducible materials including pre-tests, quizzes, exercises, worksheets, activity instructions, tests, outline maps, resource lists, appendix pages and more. A printed Companion Guide is also available to purchase for those preferring a physical copy. Information to access the digital component is included on a separate card included in the textbook. Shrink wrapped.

Best "whole family history program" ever!
I used to do unit studies with my kids, but as our family has grown, age differences made it very hard for me as a mom. I was looking for a history curriculum that we could all read together and then let each kid work on activities at their own level, but that was open and go for me as the teacher. This book has that and more! It's Biblically sound, teaches a timelines and stories approach to history, is genuinely fascinating even to younger kids, and I learn new things every day with my children. I wish I'd found it years ago. Best history we've ever used! We'll never switch programs!

Busy, Vague Curriculum with Too Much Focus on Israel
For K-3, I can see this textbook being of value. It has general stories, the type that grandma could tell you by the bedside or by a fireplace. But for mature students, avid readers, it requires a lot of supplements, and the suggested resources are time-consuming and difficult to find and to time. If you travel or have a reluctant reader, the textbook audio on a CD is well done. If you have a reluctant reader then drawing, not notetaking is recommended. If you have a reluctant writer than lapbooking is recommended. However, lapbooking is dull. Some people love the Evan-Moor history pockets from instead. The Learning Cards are of little value to older kids, because they are vague. We tried all components, completely worked through 1/2 of the curriculum and read the whole textbook before decided to move on. Oh, the 15 or so prophet stories/chapters is what really was the pivital moment for us in deciding to move away from this series. These chapters sounded very vague and similar to one another. Pretesting and testing is easy for all ages. We regret spending our money and time on this curriculum.

Worth it
We love the whole Myster of History series. The moment it arrived, my son browsed through it and he's excited to start studying. The way MOH was presented makes my son wants to know more.

Good but not great.
We wanted something that would teach biblical history along side world history so my student could see and understand that things the bible were happening at the same time as these other world events and not separately. To bring the biblical more to life. But I am finding that there is so much biblical history (which is great) but barely touches on the world history. I seem to be always looking for more to supplement, the activities are not always feasible or interesting, they seem to miss the mark often.

Happy with it!
So far I really like it. We also have Story of the World, which I like too, but I wanted to use a curriculum that had more bible/church history and I’ve heard a lot of great things about this.

Great for multiple students/grades
We have used MoH this year and loved it! Short lessons make it so even younger students are kept engaged, and the sections are 3 lessons long, which make it quite doable to finish a section per week. The kids have enjoyed drawing for the time line, and it really helps to see it all laid out like that. The assignments at the end of each lesson (or chapter) are arranged in a young student (simple) to older student (harder) fashion, which helps make it easy to use for multiple grades. I appreciate the God-centered world-view, as well. I have home schoolers from grade 2-5, and this curriculum makes it so we can do history all together. A winner for this mom!

Bought this for my 5th grader, but...
Bought this for my 5th trader to replace Famous Men Medieval and Christian Studies 1 (memoria), but I think we will wait and use Mystery of History for high school. Bought biblioplan’s remember the days and cool history student book, much better, mommy and student friendly.

Wanted to Love It
MoH Vol. 1 sounded like a great option for us this year and the reviews were glowing. I also purchased "History Timeline Through the Ages" timeline book and a pictorial timeline set to assemble as we progressed through MoH.

We've been at it for 3 months. My sons (4th and 3rd) enjoy the review tests and review activites but are not loving the lesson text. I was hoping for more "meat" from this volume but will stick with it this year.

We are 1/3 through and I consistently feel that the lessons are lacking in interesting material that causes wonder in the child. The authors own opinions are sprinkled through out the text. I would rather my own child develop their opinion/wonder from the facts of the text or through their own connections of events -unprompted by an author.

Some of the chapters are very short and a rewording of biblical text with the authors opinion added.

I have had to modify the middle student activities for my elementary aged sons as many of the the suggested younger student activities seem silly (Lesson 28: With lightweight blocks, construct two mighty pillars. Close your eyes and knock them down.")

Our family loves documentaries on ancient history and cultures through the ages. I was hoping this series would be more interesting for myself and my sons.

Why did you choose this?

I wanted to teach History from a Christian perspective, and I wanted to include all four students in the same lesson.

comprehensive

using at co-op

A friend highly recommended this series.

Does this include the audio download?

Mine included a download (pdf) of the companion materials, such as student lessons, but not audio.

Is this hardback or paperback? I thought 3rd edition of volume 1 was hardback but the details on this page say paperback.

This is a hardcover book. We will get the details updated asap. My apologies for the error.

Is there a teacher and student book or are they the same?

The boo is for the student. It comes with a code that gives you a free download of The companion guide that contains teacher suggestions, answers to activities and map work, book suggestions, BiBle reading suggestions, etc. The companion guide is extensive. About 500 pages.

Is there an audiobook available to this edition?

Yes there is an audio book to go along with all of mystery of history books. You would have to find out who has them in stock at this time though.

Does this purchase include the code to download the companion guide? Thanks!

Yes, the third edition includes a download code for the companion guide inside the front cover

Is the 3rd edition student reader available in print now?

Yes, this item is the Student Reader - Mystery of History Vol 1.

Just to confirm, This is the new student reader for the 3rd edition? Correct?

Yes, that is correct.

Does the book include test and quizzes, or is that the CD, companion book, or both, and when will the companion book be released?

With this 3rd Ed revision of Mystery of History Volume 1, the test/quizzes/activities, etc (companion book content) is available as a download from the Mystery of History website (accessible with code supplied with purchase of the text).

Other than being a hard cover instead, what are the differences between the third edition and the first edition? (I need MoH Vol 1 for an upcoming co-op class and I already have the soft cover first edition of volume 1.)

While the content of the 3rd edition and the 2nd edition is mostly the same (very small, occasional tweaks for wording, etc.), there were numerous changes with the 2nd edition from the original 1st edition. The 2nd Edution had updated lessons to reflect current research, spiced up layout, additional teacher support, answer key maps, and added 144+ pgs (672 total).

As you've noted the 3rd edition is a hardcover reader and the companion activity pages are available as a free download.

Are the pages reproducible?

There is a copyright, so in your house only. They are perforated. I actually bought the companion guide CD as I will use each volume 3 to 4 times. I did not want to keep track of the loose leaf sheets.
