Novare Chemistry Supplement (Chemistry for Accelerated Students)
Designed to prepare students for Chemistry for the Accelerated Student, this booklet provides an overview of the basic physics concepts necessary for success in chemistry. If a student has had a high school Physics course, it is not necessary to use this supplement. Students taking the Novare General Chemistry course also do not need to use this supplement.
Topics included are unit conversions, SI units, metric prefixes, significant digits, scientific notation, density, atomic theory prior to Neils Bohr, substances, physical and chemical properties, the electromagnetic spectrum, along with potential and kinetic energy. The author recommends students work through the information during the summer prior to beginning Chemistry for the Accelerated Student. Students should be able to master this information in two weeks. 27 pgs, pb. ~Deanne
This booklet is only for those preparing to use Chemistry for Accelerated Students. It is not needed for General Chemistry.
We understand that many students are coming to the Novare chemistry curriculum following Biology. This is the traditional sequence in most schools. But the Novare course sequence, designed to improve science education generally, places a physics or physical science course at the 9th grade level due to the pedagogical advantages this creates for students. Chemistry for Accelerated Students begins where a basic physics course leaves off.
But what about those students who haven't had this material?
This booklet has been created to help those students who are ready for an accelerated chemistry course, but lack a handful of physics concepts that Chemistry for Accelerated Students does not cover. The physics topics below are presented in brief form to bring such students quickly up to speed so that the real chemistry course can start. Accelerated students should be able to apprehend this material in a couple of weeks, or during the summer in preparation for a course using Chemistry for Accelerated Students.
Topics included:
* Unit Conversions
* SI Units
* Metric Prefixes
* Significant Digits
* Scientific Notation
* Density
* Atomic Theory Prior to Neils Bohr
* Types of Substances
* Physical and Chemical Properties
* The Electromagnetic Spectrum
* Potential and Kinetic Energy
Novare (no-VAH-ray) is Latin, meaning to renew or begin again. The authors feel that science education in our country needs to be renewed using research, scientific evidence and forward-thinking strategies while keeping God at the helm. Students are taught to see God in creation, while learning current scientific theories that support an old-earth creation. Using a mastery approach, students learn fewer topics in more depth than typical courses. Memorization and review are key with minimal written work. Science, math, science history, and English language usage are integrated. Several Novare courses are used by Memoria Press for their academic rigor and are a good choice for students who need challenging science courses and college prep. Each course offers a recommended downloadable Digital Resource that includes assessments and course planning resources that are helpful for homeschool families, co-ops and classrooms. Resources are reproducible for classroom use. Self-created lab journals and reports are suggested to prepare students for high school and college science material. Also available is a helpful Student Lab Report Handbook for more instruction. See each individual course for content and available supports.
Written for students with a passion for the sciences, this rigorous program will prepare student's well for college level Science courses. Providing an accelerated scope and sequence, and course pacing, this program covers all the concepts in the Novare General Chemistry text at a greater depth plus additional topics including thermochemistry and kinetics, chemical equilibrium, and an introduction to organic chemistry. Exercises are abundant and help students master the material. Due to the rigorous nature of this program, it is recommended Algebra II be taken concurrently. Physics is a pre-requisite. If your student has taken Biology and not Physics, it is highly recommended the Novare Chemistry Supplement (item #012618) be taken. It is also assumed students understand the SI system of units and unit prefixes, and can demonstrate proficiency with unit conversions and computations. A short tutorial is available in the appendix.
Embracing the same philosophy as other Novare science courses, the goal is for students to learn, master and retain what they are learning. This means students will cover fewer topics with more depth. The author also integrates learning by combing skills in the areas of science, math, history, and English Language usage. Additionally, the Kingdom perspective is evident, as students study the complexity of God's magnificent world and current scientific claims. Laboratory experiments and reports are vital to this program. The author offers two coordinating Chemistry Experiments for High School Resource books – one designed for home labs, and the other for schools with a standard lab facility and equipment. (See individual descriptions for more information.)
Components include the Chemistry for Accelerated Students textbook which provides introductory information for teachers with teaching philosophy, recommendations and lab work and reports. Following is a brief student introduction with recommendations for effective study tips and the standards problem summary. The text content targets students with a strong aptitude for science and mathematics, and who have developed strong study habits. It is rigorous, with a well written narrative as well as helpful illustrations and diagrams. Chapter objectives, examples and exercises are also included, along with helpful appendices and an index. 509 pgs, hc.
Solutions Manual to Accompany Chemistry for Accelerated Students contains fully detailed solutions for all the computational problems in the textbook.130 pgs, pb.
Chemistry Experiments for High School is written for schools with standard laboratory facilities and equipment, and includes detailed information for teacher and student on lab safety, instructions for 20 experiments, supply lists, discussion questions and more. Individual experiment instructor notes are also included in the back of the book. Each experiment concludes with a short report. Pages are perforated for easy removal. This resource accompanies both the General Chemistry and the Chemistry for Accelerated Students with text references provided for both texts. The author recommends the optional Student Lab Report Handbook (item #047300) to accompany the laboratory experiments. Spiral bound.Chemistry Experiments for High School at Home is written for homeschools or schools without a standard lab facility. The author begins with an overview of the importance of the lab experience as well discussing costs and materials – including alternative suggestions for harder to find or costly materials. Also provided are links for online retailers for many of the items needed. Safety procedures and pre-experiment preparation activities follow. There are 19 experiments included. Each experiment provides instructions, supply lists, discussion questions and more. Additional helpful notes to the experimenter are in the back of the book. Pages are perforated so students can remove the Short Form Report Sheets for each experiment. This resource accompanies both the General Chemistry and the Chemistry for Accelerated Students with text references provided for both texts. The author recommends the optional Student Lab Report Handbook (item #047300) to accompany the laboratory experiments. Spiral bound.
Also available are the downloadable Digital Resources which includes a course overview, quizzes, chapter and semester assessments, and all related answer keys. It also includes a lessons list, and sample calendar and graded lab report. ~Deanne
