Awesome Supplement to Story of the World to create a full year of history!
This resource has coloring pages and some activities for each chapter, maps, timeline suggestions, craft suggestions, recipes and reading list suggestion to complement each chapter. Many of the books in the reading lists were found in my local library. This activity book truly fills out a year long of history. It’s close to open and go. May want to look ahead a little for supplies for crafts, recipes, and any other books you would want.

Save a step and buy the digital version!
Ages 4 and 5, my girls are loving the Story of the World. We don't use all the activity pages included, but we like the map activities and I LOVE the research that has gone into this project. The best part of the Activity book is actually the wealth of additional recommended resources that can be referenced if your kids want to further explore a subject.

My boys love this!
I would recommend this product. It states that all pages are reproducible for family needs, so if you have a copier you'll find it handy. The coloring pages gives them something to keep their bodies busy and focused so they can listen to the story. Having their own set of markers, crayons, gel pens, etc. has been helpful in staying focused and minimizing side discussions (fights). I love that the maps require marking on them and my boys seem to have a good grasp on the geography because of it. Some of the activities are fun ideas with minimal to no planning. My boys loved the archeology dig in the sandbox. Other activities, like mummifying a chicken... we skipped that one. I used this with five of my boys, ages 13-4. We are now purchasing the activity book for the Middle Ages and continuing our journey. The only thing I wish we had done was to make a timeline on blank paper on our wall of all these stories as we read them.

Go deeper into SOTW
There are a variety of additional projects, from art to crafts to cooking, as well as many, many books that you can find on your own to enhance the learning. My experience was that most of the additional books were not at my library, even though I live in a large metropolitan area with a great system. However, the descriptions did help me search for comparable books on the subject. We enjoyed most of the projects that we did, and there will certainly be far more options than you can feasibly do in a single school year, giving you variety in the type of projects you choose for each chapter. Definitely worth the purchase, though it does feel wasteful that at least 25% of our student sheets went untouched.

Homeschool Group Recommended

Worked through this series with my older students and starting again with our youngest.

I noticed review questions in the activity guide, how is this different than the separate test book?  Are the activities a good use of time to reinforce things, or if we're time pressed and my kid doesn't love crafts/writing should we just stick to the tests?

The questions in the activity book are written more to see if the student grasps the overall concept of the lesson. We use those questions while teaching the lesson...alternating between reading a few paragraphs of the lesson and asking the next question in the activity book...the questions are in the same order so that they follow the lesson. The questions on the tests however, all follow a pattern: several fill-in the blank, several multiple choice, several true/false and one question asking for the answer in a one to two sentence format. We will do some of the activities such as the map work or a coloring page or maybe a game or paper doll cut-out, but only if we have the time.

Does one need both the SOTW paperback or hardback copy and the SOTW Activity Book? Or does the Activity Book also include the stories? Thank you!

Hi! The Activity book supplements SOTW book. It does not contain the stories. The Activity books contains a lot though! I love them. There is a teacher section and a student section. The teacher section has review questions, narration questions, map instructions, craft or activity instructions, a book list for further study or literature connections. This is given chapter by chapter. The student section contains mainly coloring pages and maps for each chapter. My son is 8, therefore needs more than just the stories. The Activity Book allows us to add to the curriculum to make it a full year. Also love the maps!! Hope this helps.

What is the difference between the Activity book and the Student Pages?

The student pages is only the pages students would write on to go along with the stories (for example: coloring pages, maps, printable game sheets, etc.). The activity book includes black line masters of these pages, but also has a full section of suggested questions for each stories and tons of extra activity ideas which you would prepare by yourself (some require a bit of planning while others can be quite spontaneous). I’d recommend a paperback copy of the activity book and a digital download for the student pages, especially if you plan to use Story of the World for more than one child. Though my kids’ favorite part is still the stories themselves.

Is this curriculum sufficient and suitable for high school world history? If not, can anyone recommend a Christian based world history curriculum? Thank you.

Susan Wise Bauer has written an upper level (grades 7-12) book for the same time period - History of the Ancient World - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=041239

There is a companion study guide to this book - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=012354&subject=History%2FGeography/14&category=History+of+the+Ancient+World/10483

These are definitely sufficient and suitable for a high school Ancient World History course.

There are similar books for other time periods: Medieval World - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=018010Medieval World Study Guide - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=059917Renaissance World - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=008616

I'd like to get the SOTW books to read with all my children (ages 8,7, 4 and 3). Of course the older kids will understand it better than the younger ones, but I'm okay with that. My question is, will one activity book suffice for the family, or would we need one activity book for each child involved?

Our family uses one activity book for our 3 kids (ages 6, 7 & 9) and our friend's two children (ages 4 & 7). The one book serves us just fine for ideas and crafts, etc without violating copyright laws, etc. I don't think more than one book is necessary for one home educating family. If using the pages for personal use in one family it's permissible to use a copier to xerox maps, coloring pages, etc. We love Story of the World! I also really recommend the audio CDs. It's easy to pop those in when we're driving around and then the understanding and application is pretty effortless afterwards. And Jim Weiss is the narrator and he is a wonderful reader.

What is the difference between the revised edition and the older edition? I have the older one and would like to know if I really need to upgrade. Thanks for your time.

Hello,
I am using the Story of the World series to teach Ancient History at a homeschool co-op. Some of my students have the original and some have the revised books. Since some of the families had already owned the book, I have tried to make adjustments when needed so that the families did not have to buy a new edition. So far, most of the content is the same with an infrequent difference in a map between the editions. I don't see it necessary to upgrade. Have a great night.
