Publisher's Description of Mapping the World By Heart Curriculum with Maps

FableVision Learning's Mapping the World by Heart curriculum is designed for students grades 5-12 to have a comprehensive knowledge of geography that allows them to map the world entirely from memory.

The award-winning curriculum is the creation of David J. Smith with illustrations from Peter H. Reynolds. The curriculum teaches students to draw – entirely from memory – detailed world maps including the names, borders, mountain ranges, rivers, and major cities of more than 190 countries.

* Gets students excited about geography and encourages them to think globally.

* Promotes positive student interactions and collaboration, both in small group work and as a class.

* Provides teachers with flexible lessons they can easily integrate into their existing curriculum.

* Gives students a constructive goal to work towards all year long.

The curriculum includes a set of maps and a comprehensive teacher's guide that makes it easy to integrate lessons and activities into any class's existing curriculum. Additional maps can be purchased separately. Combining memorization with the real use of knowledge, practice, mnemonics, large and small group activities, and games, Mapping the World by Heart inspires students to study – and love – geography.

You will need to provide your students with one atlas per student or per group of students who are working together; also, other handy reference tools include a globe, and one or more copies of almanacs (such as The World Almanac, The Time Almanac, etc.). The creator, David Smith, offers recommendations for these on his website: www.mapping.com

Category Description for Mapping The World By Heart

Your children can become junior cartographers and learn to "map the world by heart," literally, with this wonderful aid to geographical literacy. Amazing results are achieved by using this incremental program which gives students a real sense of the world's layout. A variety of wonderful activities are used to develop both map-drawing and map-reading skills. The lessons are clear and easy to use, with helpful illustrations. While not as comprehensive as a high-school geography course, this program does include the study of different cultures and global issues related to geography. It would work well as a stand-alone course for late elementary grades or junior high, or in conjunction with a geography text in high school. The program was revised and updated in 2010 and now includes the curriculum (in 3-ring binder) and a set of 17 maps. The set of maps includes 10 regional maps (Canada, U.S., Mexico, Central America, South America, Africa, Europe, Eastern Europe and North Asia, South Asia, and Oceania) as well as blank grids and filled-in outline maps of the world in Mercator, Robinson and Equirectangular projections. Additional map sets are also available separately. Three additional appendices have been added to the curriculum, which apply the "mapping by heart" method to the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, for smaller, more focused studies. The video that was previously packaged with the curriculum is now available for viewing at the publisher's website, www.fablevisionlearning.com/mappingtheworldbyheart.
