Description

Subtitled "Clear Steps to Easy Reading and Perfect Spelling," this volume lives up to its name. Using a Basic Phonics approach (aka "pure" phonics), no sight words are introduced until basic decoding and reading skills are well-established. Even then, such words are introduced in clusters according to sound and spelling pattern so that they may be more easily learned. If you are familiar with other phonics programs, this one strikes me as a cross between Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons and Alpha-Phonics. It is well organized, systematic, incremental, and thorough in its presentation. Instructions are clear and lessons require no preparation time. After reading through the brief introduction, you can sit right down with the book and your child, spending 10-15 minutes a day on the lessons. If you feel overwhelmed or ill-equipped to teach your child to read, you should be able to succeed with this program because the author has already done the "legwork" for you. She provides it all - how to present and explain each phonogram, spelling rules that apply, reviews, exercises and helpful tips. Additionally, the author includes exercises for vision/motor coordination exercises (which are apparently identical to ones prescribed by ophthalmologists for problems with eye strength or tracking). Testimonials abound, with success stories in regular classrooms, from home schoolers, with learning disabled children, and with older and remedial students. The approach is multisensory, so it will be just as usable with a visual learner as an auditory or kinesthetic one. Going beyond teaching phonograms, the book covers contractions, plural forms, homonyms and homophones, homographs, prefixes, suffixes, and compound words. An additional helpful feature is the attention given to syllabication. The author's approach here makes it possible for the young reader to confidently tackle even the longest words. As she so aptly states, "How children learn may be different - but what they learn should be the same. Everyone should be able to decode even the longest unfamiliar words, syllable by syllable." Indeed, the book progresses from "a" to "A strong foundation to a house is indispensable" with sure mastery of skills in between. Typeface for the student to read is large (24 pt) so as not to strain the eyes and both printed and written forms of "a" and "g" are taught. The program is self-contained with no supplemental readers or materials required (though you will probably want to supply your student with additional reading material at his skill level). Welcome additions to the 10th edition include: pictures illustrating every sound introduced, lessons in dividing multi-syllable words, and nonsense word reviews to ensure learning. The paperback format also features easy-to-copy, lay-flat pages. The appropriate integration of spelling rules into the phonics lessons (reminiscent of An Acorn in My Hand) make this an excellent spelling reference also. Little proverbs of encouragement, both for teacher and student, are sprinkled generously throughout. One oddity of the book is that it seems to be written from a third person point of view - speaking to the student but, at times, addressing both you and the student as though the author was there speaking to both of you (kind of like a phonics facilitator). This threw me in the first bank of instructions, but, after that, its references to the teacher as a separate entity disappear, and the text can be used as your verbal instruction to your child. The completeness, ease of use, and relatively low cost of this program should make it valuable to homeschoolers as their basal phonics curriculum.

Not Suited for Kindergarten Homeschool
I purchased this as our phonics resource for Kindergarten homeschool. I never intended to homeschool; I made a quick decision in August due to the pandemic and therefore did not have a lot of time to review curricula or prepare. I bought this book based on several positive reviews from reputable homeschool sites. I think this book would be better suited for an older student or an English language learner in an intensive program. It goes in to detail on each sound as to why it is spelled that way and I certainly as an adult have a better grasp of phonics at this point. However, for an emergent Kindergarten reader, it is not very captivating. There are not a lot of activities, instead it consists mostly of lists of words that match the sound being taught on each page. The little lessons from the worm aren't relevant to the material nor are they things that Kindergartners care about. There are simple sentences to read, but again, the subject matter isn't relevant to 5 year olds, even if the words are simple enough. Also, the top of each page has a paragraph with a picture in the middle of it and the placement of the picture makes it very confusing to read the text as it doesn't wrap in a normal fashion. So, overall, I am not using this resource to its full potential in our program and I do not recommend it for Kindergarten learning.

Great companion to “Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.” Lots of extra practice sounding out blends and words.

Wonderful
Other programs have frustrated my 5-6 yr olds because the lessons get too long. Phonics Pathways is quick and the fun, simple games really help them retain what they learned.

Pathway to Phonics Rocks!
We started using Pathway to Phonics with our youngest son, when he was five. By age six, he was on a fourth grade reading level! We now use it with all four of our children, ages 5-11. What a treasure!

Teaches necessary skills quickly
After about a week, I've noticed improved skills with my 7 year old's spelling/enunciation. Wish I would've started using this book earlier! The kids get to laugh while we do the lessons - contains some cute humor.

Very Impressed!
I purchased this program because I needed a comprehensive, easy to teach, and affordable phonics program for my 1st grader. I am amazed at the difference in her reading ease in just the past 3 months we have been using Phonics Pathways. By the time we finish this school year, she will know every phonics sounds plus contractions, syllables, etc. My only regret is that I didn't find this sooner. She easily could have completed this program last year in Kindergarten. The only very small complaint I have is the little cartoon drawings with needless sayings. We just ignore them. I would definitely recommend this product.

I really like this curriculum. It is easy to use and fun for all; even those not studying phonics want to play. I should have gotten this sooner but this is helping make up for not getting it right the first time. Sometimes I think the directions could be a little clearer but as long as I slow back down and read them carefully they are fine. This has been very helpful.

This is my first year using Phonics Pathways My first child was a natural reader/speller and I didn't need a phonics program for him Fast forward 3 years and there I had a little one who I could plainly see needed a lot more guidance I decided to give Phonics Pathways a try and I believe I made the right decision It is a very simple and straightforward approach that only takes a few minutes a day yet yields results quickly The author gives plenty of suggestions on how to use the book and there are some reproducible games included which require a small amount of teacher prep I will admit that there have been a few times my daughter has been a bit weary with doing the same thing every day so we've mixed things up by using BOB books and some simple phonics games One feature I like about this book is the "student achievement chart" It allows you to record the date that each new concept is started and then mastered This is especially helpful if you are required to provide documentation of academic progress as is the case in some states Overall I have been pleased with Phonics Pathways and plan to use it as needed with my next 2 children as well

This is my favorite phonics program by far In the past I have used a hodge-podge of materials to teach/tutor phonics with great success but this one tops them all I have been using Phonics Pathways with my preschooler for several months and he is progressing quickly and solidly I love the fact that it's not scripted There is virtually no preparation you just open and have the child read a page It's definitely my favorite homeschool purchase thus far

Why did you choose this?

I am hoping to use this alongside A Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading.

Recommended in the Well Trained Mind book.

Need to supplement 100 Easy Lessons.

I am homeschooling for the first time and reading the The Well Trained Mind and using the resources in the book.

Has anyone used this AFTER completing Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons? If so, where in the book did you start? I assume starting at the beginning would be too much of a repeat for us.

Yes, I used it for one of my kids after 100 Easy Lessons. In the beginning fo the book, there is a page number layout for approximate grade levels. Also, there are review pages along the way. You could do those review pages with your child until they get really hung up and then you'll have a better idea of where to start. Also, check out Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading. I found that to be my favorite follow up after 100 Easy Lessons. It has a phonics lesson followed by practicing it on a fun little story with review included. So while it's doesn't look exactly the same as 100 Easy Lessons, I found it similar with the little stories that make them laugh. The lessons are very clearly laid out, which I found easier to handle than Phonics Pathways. Hope this helps!

Does this curriculum have religious content?

No religious content. It is all generic, skill based content with vowels, word families and poems with repeated phrases and families.

Does my child already need to know the alphabet to use this?

I believe so. This is teaching the sounds that go with the letters. I would recommend this only as a refresher as it moves quickly. However, if you were to slow down and focus on just the one sound for a while and its sound it may be used as an introduction. The phonogram app from All About Reading, which I think is free, could be a big help in pronunciation of the sounds. We came out of this not clearly understanding why or when to use the different sounds of the same letter though. My son could conquer a page of sounds and words but then not always use them correctly later. Of course, we all learn at different points and could just not have clicked for him at the time we used this. We ended up going with All About Reading, wishing I had done so earlier, and my son's speed of understanding has greatly improved. Once they have the alphabet and are asking what sound it makes or you want to give them the sounds and then see if they ask about others, I think this is a good indication they are ready for that phonetic instruction.

Is there a lot of handwriting required in this program?

As a multi-sensory approach to phonics/reading, there are suggestions for writing the letters/words etc. from the very beginning of the instruction (i.e. trace the letter). You would be able to adjust those expectations to the needs of your student as desired.

Would this help my struggling fourth grade speller/reader?

I think so! I purchased it for my first grader to learn phonics and after we started it, I had my third grader join us everyday because she is my struggling reader/speller. It has exceeded my expectations. My first grader is a very fluent reader and I can see great improvement in my third grader. She actually likes reading now which is huge for her. I definitely recommend this book. And you can't beat the price.
