Publisher's Description of Victory Drill Book, Third Edition

The key to the Victory Drill Book's effectiveness is that lists of words are strategically grouped together by phonetic sounds. As the sounds are mastered, students become progressively better prepared for paragraph reading. In the process, an emphasis on speed enhances the transition from "sounding out" to efficient reading.

The Victory Drill Book offers an immediate edge in developing those life-shaping skills by providing a systematic approach to high speed phonetic reading. Designed for either a total-class or individualized approach, the Victory Drill Book is as effective in a home-school setting as in a structured classroom, producing outcomes that will help ensure students' ongoing success in every other segment of their education.

Category Description for Victory Drill Book
This reading reinforcement resource has been around for over 30 years, and in use around our house for at least 20! Regardless of the reading program you use, this helpful tool will ensure that your students are progressing in their reading speed through an eighth-grade reading level. Although a abbreviated lists of phonics and spelling rules are provided, most of the book is devoted to word lists. Several columns of words are listed on a page, grouped by a common phonetic construct. The student reads the words while being timed. Words read per minute tell you at what grade level the child is reading according to the followin (no longer included in the book):
  • Pre-K (20 words)
  • K (30 words)
  • Grade 1 (40 words)
  • Grade 2 (55 words)
  • Grade 3 (70 words)
  • Grade 4 (85 words)
  • Grade 5 (100 words)
  • Grade 6 (115 words)
  • Grade 7 (130 words)
  • Grade 8 (130 words)
  • The idea is to have the child repeat the drill every day until she is reading at or beyond grade level. This can be pretty challenging, especially at the onset of reading. Occasional review pages combine words with similar constructs, and pages with paragraphs for practice reading are also included.

We have found this to be a most useful vehicle for taking the children from decoding to reading. Until a child is able to decode words at some level of speed, it is difficult to have them read for meaning. By the time they reach the end of even a short sentence, the meaning may be lost. Not always enjoyable, some skills just require practice, practice, practice! A child just beginning to read may need to start out with just a column or two per page as an entire page may be too taxing. The print is large and easy to read. Drills only take a minute or two, but will greatly help the young reader sharpen her decoding skills.

The phonics worksheets (150 pages) are a good supplement. The sheets include page numbers that correspond to the page on which the phonics skill is practiced in the Victory Drill Book.

The Victory Pre-Drill Book is for use by beginning students. It provides high-speed handwriting practice of the alphabet and correct pronunciation of phonetic letters and letter combinations before students proceed to the Victory Drill Book. The newly revised (now spiral-bound) VDB Teacher's Guide provides direction for page-by-page use of the Victory Drill Book. It presents a sequential presentation of phonetic instruction corresponding to the Victory Drill Book sequence. A CD is also available to help both you and your student hear the correct phonetic sounds of letters and letter combinations. The CD corresponds to the presentation of sounds in the Victory Drill Book.

Victory Drill Book should be in EVERY Pre-K, K, and 1-5 Grade Schools
I used Victory Drill book when home educating my children about 20+ years ago. This book along with McGuffey's Eclectic Reading books definitely put our children onto a solid path. As the kids became solid readers with the short stories, Victory Drills absolutely helped inspire 'personal bests' when a small timer is brought into the mix. Reading aloud distinctly helped give them more confidence speaking clearly. Mumbling is not allowed. IF you also add a set of "Minute Timers" to the drills, you can inspire ALL AGES to play 'drills'. I bought a set similar to this one: KSM UP Sand Timer 6 Colors Hourglass 1/3/5/10/15/30 Minutes Sandglass Timer Sand Clock for Kids Games Classroom Kitchen Home Office Decoration (Pack of 6). Of course, give new readers more time in the beginning, then once they 'conquer' a timer three or more times, then they can go 'up' to a shorter timer. These timers should be sold on this site, if they're not. Anyway.... I just purchased FOUR of these books for each of my children for my gandchildren. Oh, for those that are <10, I used hand puppets to 'compete' with them when they read. My "puppet" (Like Meeko, the racoon, from Pocohontas) would 'stumble' over some words, then as the child got better and faster, so did Meeko). The kids knew I was speaking for Meeko, but it gave them a little friend to work with.... which is so much better than old Mom...and so much more fun for all. (I acted out a voice as well.) Anyway, I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. It's amazing.

My overall impression and review is that you need to share with the public school system.
The Victor drill workbook is an exceptional resource for children and adults. I purchase the book for one of my friend granddaughters. My friend was so excited that she ordered all the resources that support the victory drill book.

I explain to my friend that my children who are ages 41, 38 and 35 all went through the entire resource program of
    Victory drill.

    Why did you choose this?

    Retired Reading Teacher

30+ years ago, I went through the Victory Drill book as a first grade student, and now that I am a classroom aide, I keep hearing from parents that the value the Victory Drill program provides is…

    required for university model kindergarten!

for supplemental training for my granddaughter. Recommended by a teacher.

Is the third edition of the Victory Drill Book, the same as the revised edition (copyright 2009)?

I believe so, but you could contact the publisher directly to verify that.
    https://www.victorydrillbook.com/contact-victory-drill-book/

does this book have hard cover?

Yes, I ordered mine about 2 years ago. Looks the same.well made hard cover.

Is there any religious content in this book?

No, I do not believe there is. It is literally a series of drills to read aloud, followed by short stories. As you progress, the content gets harder as skills build. I've bought so many of these books to give away. It's part of a critical skills building book, which is so necessary today. Love this book!
