Back in 1990, when homeschooling was still in its toddlerhood, the first edition of this book was selected as Best New Book. Aimed at the homeschooling parent, Ruth Beechick picks up where she leaves off in her ever valuable Three R’s Series. Taking an in-depth, common sensible look at each of these R’s (reading, writing and arithmetic), she details teaching strategies and techniques as well as giving a general scope and sequence for grades 4-8. For instance, examination of textual, imaginational, and functional reading; the mechanics of writing coupled with usage and grammar as well as the various types of writing - describing, narrating, explaining, and reasoning; and general guidelines for each grade level of math. Then she looks beyond. In each academic area - history and social studies, science and health, music and art, and the Bible - she provides helpful teaching information and methods. Dr. Beechick, a highly experienced teacher/curriculum developer, will have you saying goodbye to feelings of inadequacy and acknowledging that you CAN teach your child successfully! 388 pgs, pb. ~ Janice

You Can Teach Your Child Successfully by Ruth Beechick is a lifesaver for those of you who are overwhelmed with curricula options and do not know where to begin. Get started with Beechick's simple advice! She lays out some very practical help in the areas of reading and writing with some straightforward lesson plans. The way she teaches writing is the way that Ben Franklin taught himself. This book acts as a guide for me when I am not sure which direction to go next; it helps me get back on track too--a must-have for any homeschooler!

This book is a resource I return to again and again. It grounds me when I am feeling drawn to all the new-fangled curricula available each fall. The information presented is so simple and basic. Like a good friend, Dr. Beechick encourages the reader that they CAN do a good job teaching their child. This is better than a pep talk! The methods are common sense and practical. The recommended tools are inexpensive and simple. The results have been tested by time. Although I have purchased many resources in my eleven years of homeschooling, few have served me as well as this unassuming little book! I heartily recommend it to new and veteran homeschoolers alike!
