I did not discover Story of the World until my children were in 4th and 7th grade. We had always used unit studies and so I felt that they knew a lot of history but did not have a grasp of events in chronological order. We have been hooked on these audio books since that year. We listen to a chapter and then we use our Kingfisher Encyclopedia of History and other books from our personal library and the public library to dig a little deeper. I always tell homeschoolers that SOTW is great as a stand alone if you have children in younger grades and it is also great as a "jumping off place" if your children are older. It provides an outline that keeps auditory learners focused. If you have visual learners, I would recommend the book rather than the audiobook. Kinesthetic learners will benefit from the short chapters and the activity books. Since my children were older and were accustomed to unit studies, I did not use the activity books. The activity books are truly for younger students as is recommended. We also use a timeline to help us remember important people. You may want to purchase plastic CD cases at an office supply store ($7) so that you can easily use the CDs.

The SOTW history program delivers! My dd LOVES history and, because of Story Of The World, wants to be an archaeologist when she grows up. SOTW is a wonderful history program to use and would be SO EASY to use with multiple students at once. Because it reads like a story, it keeps kids interested every step of the way. Even my 2 yo will climb up on the couch and listen to the story. The activity book is wonderful for my 1st grader. She enjoys the coloring and other activities. This is also a curriculum guide which is a must as it has lists of additional books to pick up from the library. The library books are a huge help in cementing what you've learned. The additional activities listed in the guide are a lot of fun, too. No prep time is required by you unless you want to get the supplemental books from the library. This curriculum would be SO EASY to use with multiple students at once. No one can believe how much my dd knows about Ancient Egypt ... she stumped adults with her trivia questions! The SOTW text and curriculum/activity book are my favorite purchases of the year! I feel this is the best history program out there.

Finally, a CD for kids that the parents can enjoy equally. We have listened to this series while on road trips and our whole family becomes entranced in the story. Even our youngest (2 and 3 at the time) was content to listen to these CDs. When not joyriding, these CDs are ideal for the auditory learner, the beginning and developing reader, as well as the tired and/or stressed teacher who has had enough (i.e. me). =) I have had great success playing these for my kids while they read along in the SOTW books. Not only are they getting the benefit of reading (seeing the words) it while hearing it simultaneously, I get a bit of a break from reading once and a while. We have listened to the CDs several times; they are definitely worth the cost regardless if you use SOTW academically or not.

I originally bought the Story of the World Ancient Times (Volume 1) audiobook to play in the car while on vacation. It quickly became my seven-year-old daughter's favorite audiobook. She plays it all day sometimes, turning it on before she even eats breakfast. With all this repetition, the resulting learning has been phenomenal, both with concepts and details. When we went to the library to get a book out on Alexander the Great, she pointed to a picture of Alexander's horse and said its name, much to the amusement of the librarian. If I have a history question, I ask her first -- she knows more than I do. I used the audiobook without the printed book or activity book, so there was no work involved for me. I did purchase the Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of the Ancient World, so that she could browse it and see pictures and text related to what she was hearing. She has taken a big interest in the book due to having already heard related stories. If your child is an auditory learner, this audiobook is a way you can extend the learning time while finding valuable time to do chores, etc. It is definitely worth the money for both learning value and time-saving value. My experience with the Story of the world Ancient Times audiobook has been so good that I'm getting ready to purchase the Middle Ages (volume 2). And I plan to use the other two volumes in the series too.
