I talked with a new-to-homeschooling mom the other day who told me she had read through the Rainbow catalog from cover to cover. I was incredulous! She insisted she had read everything except some sections that were obviously too young (preschool/K) or too old (high school) for her 5th grader. She exclaimed, “I learned so much – it was like attending a homeschool convention!” Homeschooling Methods makes the same claim about itself – “like a homeschool convention in a book” – but the size is a less intimidating 300 pages. It presents an overview of the various approaches to homeschooling – classical, principle approach, traditional textbook, Charlotte Mason, unit study, special needs, carschooling ®, eclectic, unschooling/ delight directed, and whole-heart learning. Each section starts with a succinct summary followed by articles from one or more noted proponents of the method. If you have been looking into homeschooling even for a short time you will come across such terms as Classical Method, Charlotte Mason, Unschooling, Principal Approach and Eclectic. What are they and what do they mean? If you are new to homeschooling or even if you have been homeschooling a while, all these approaches and methods can be very confusing.
