Think of this as a light God & the History of Art or maybe a precursor. It’s a 1-year art curriculum incorporating art instruction and art history. The book opens with a “History of Art in a Nutshell” written strictly from a Christian worldview (of course). Barry then turns to instruction using colored pencils, with 12 lessons beginning with color theory and progressing to drawing from nature. A discussion of “God and Art” follows, addressing topics like creativity, the Great Creator, and nudity in art from a Biblical perspective. The rest of the book covers Christian Artists: Fra Angelico, Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jean Francois Millet, Carl Block, Georges Rouault, The Nazarenes, and the Pre-Raphaelites. Each study contains biographical information about the artist, black-and-white illustrations of some of his works, and related art lessons. There are 68 lessons in all, effectively integrating art instruction with the well-written and informative text.
