Maybe a trip around the world is a little out of your budget, but you can bring a “taste” of the world into your home! This book by Jamie Aramini takes you to all the continents and exposes you to the native cuisines and authentic dinning customs found there. For example, in Africa you will have a chance to re-create dining experiences from Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa. Each country not only has three different recipes provided, but information on the culture, dining traditions, key ingredients, and native words or phrases for you to try and use during the meal. The recipes range in difficulty, but all of them use ingredients that you would find in your local grocery store. This is a great book to incorporate into your geography lessons; as you study different countries you can treat family and friends to an international meal and dress, talk, and dine according to that country’s customs. The author also provides reproducible activities that will help get your kids excited about eating their way around the world, including a Food Journal, Food Passport, and websites to check out for more native recipes! This book is going to transform meal time into a fun learning time for all! 112 pgs, spiral-bound, pb. - elise

"Eat Your Way Around the World" is a cookbook which is designed to be a companion to the world geography unit study "Galloping the Globe." "Eat Your Way Around the World" is a cookbook covering the seven continents and countries within those continents. The recipes represent those which are historically the most popular for a country. The author has adapted the recipes to make them as simple as possible; to make them with ingredients which are easily obtainable at your local supermarket. In the book's introduction the author includes information about how to use the book, background information on the recipes, and dinner/food activities. Each country contains information about the country, three recipes, a food profile, culture a la carte, and a space to make notes. The appendix contains a reproducible page so your child can make a food journal, a culinary passport, and internet links. Our family has been very happy with the cookbook and I know we will continue to use it even after we have finished our trip around the world in 36 weeks.

I purchased "Galloping the Globe" because my child wanted to study children in other countries and cultures. "Galloping the Globe" is a unit study which is designed to take you around the world in 1-3 years. The unit study is written for Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. The curriculum is divided into the seven continents and countries within the continents. Each country is divided into the following sections: people/history, general reference books, literature, science, vocabulary, music/art projects, internet resources and the Bible. The weaknesses of this curriculum are: 1. The curriculum has no set schedule, you will have to create your own. 2. The science section is the introduction to the animal kingdom. If your child loves science you will have to supplement with additional materials/experiments. The strengths of this curriculum are: 1. There is a wealth of information in this unit study, which can be a bit overwhelming at first. However you can pick and choose what sections you would like to cover and what resources to utilize. 2. The cookbook "Eat Your Way Around the World" is an excellent resource for cooking up culinary delights from other cultures. 3. The curriculum is extremely affordable. 4. The section on "Christmas Around the World" gives you an opportunity to celebrate Christmas in the tradition of other countries and cultures. 5. The Yahoo Group which is owned by the author is a great place to meet other families who are utilizing the curriculum. Additional resources we are utilizing to complete our journey of "around the world in 36 weeks" are: V.M. Hillyer's "A Child's Geography of the World", The Walt Disney /Walden Media movie version of "Around the World in 80 Days", DK Children Just Like Me, DK Children Just Like Me Celebrations, DK Animal Encyclopedia,Heaven's Heroes and Hero Tales.

After going around the world in 36 weeks with "Galloping the Globe" our daughter decided she would like to "Canter the Country" to study United States geography/history for third grade. To enhance our study of the 50 states we purchased "Eat Your Way Across the USA." which is a compilation of recipes from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. For each state there is a native dish, side dish and dessert along with "fun food facts" from the state. Our family is looking forward to using this cookbook as we did "Eat Your Way Around the World."
