The second book does not feature the classic American Girl characters; instead there is a contemporary American girl named Marie and her group of friends who live modern lives with movies, boys, and slumber parties. There are 20 mysteries/puzzles to solve in this one, and the themes are much more secular, with mention of ghosts, witches, and crushes on boys.
