All About the Rainforest
When your children are young, learning should be fun, but it’s sometimes difficult to come up with ideas and topics. This series can take away some of the stress by providing the framework for a variety of topics. These books are so well laid out that no previous experience is required to work through the units smoothly.
A list of age-appropriate skills for that unit, a table of contents, and thorough instructions are included at the front of each book. Each book is divided into 5 units, and each unit follows the same format. A full color storybook begins the unit, and then a reproducible, blackline mini-book is available for the student to color and keep for themselves. The stories are very simple and include only one to two lines of text below each picture. Following the mini-book are the full color storyboard pieces, which are to be cut out and given to the child to use as they retell the story in their own words. An art activity which may be a cut and paste or a project done with items around your house, and a cooking activity that goes along with the theme allow for some hands-on time. Activity pages for practicing basic skills in language and math provide some workbook practice. A center activity and the pieces needed for implementation are printed in the book along with directions for the activity. You may need to cut out pieces for a matching game, memory game, puzzles, or the activity may use household items. My favorite activities in the units are the outdoor activity and the music/dramatic play. These allow the student to move around, and use their imagination. Some examples are walking like different animals, playing dress-up, singing new words to an old tune, and so much more. A set of alphabet cards are included at the back of every book. Cut them out, laminate them, store them in envelopes, and use them with the suggested list of games.
Although there are some suggestions for group activities, these would be helpful books to use at home with your young ones. They would also be a great resource for a co-op, play group, or any other gathering of young friends. - Donna
