Abra Vocabra
Okay, it’s not quite magic so much as practice and learning, but your students will learn the vocabulary words in these books by the end! Abra Vocabra is based on 240 words that people will commonly encounter -- so it helps to know what they mean! The books are divided into 24 sections, and each section features a word list of 10 words plus two bonus words. When the words are introduced, the meaning is given and then the word is used in context in two different sentences so students can see how it is used. Following the word list, several activities give students a chance to practice what they’ve learned. The first activity is a matching exercise where students match all twelve new words to their meanings. Fill-in-the-Blanks is the next activity, but these aren’t your typical random sentences -- you fill-in-the-blanks to a story that uses all of the vocabulary words. None of the stories have endings, though, so students are challenged to finish the stories utilizing the two bonus words from that section. There are lots of ideas in the book’s introduction for games and exercises to further test and cement learning. Answers for all the activities are included in the back of the book. While these books don’t include dictionary skills or necessarily how to further your vocabulary study on your own, they teach all the commonly used words that your student should master by ninth grade, laid out in a friendly and very usable way.
