Looking for some light, entertaining reading to supplement your history studies? This fun book shares the history of 26 words or common items that are often used but rarely explained. One term is given for each letter of the alphabet (from Alphabet to Zero) and then that term includes background facts and interesting tidbits of information. There are just a few pages for each alphabetical term, so the info isn’t incredibly detailed, more of just an entertaining, concise look at the item. Find out who invented the alphabet and how it developed and affected the world, where diamonds come from and how they became so popular, the symbolism and historical importance of pretzels, where Valentines Day came from and how it has changed over the years, and more. Please note that this is a secular book and a few statements lean toward evolutionary thought (like some diamonds being older than our solar system) and non-religious beliefs (like the explanation of Easter that focuses on the Easter bunny and ancient practices that happened before the resurrection of Christ) but overall it’s historically accurate and just fun to read. With a great mix of educational and entertaining topics, this book will be enjoyed by students and adults alike. 116 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel
