8 Kinds of Writing
This is a book designed to help students improve their writing in eight different writing styles. These are: autobiography, information report, biography, evaluative writing, observational writing, problem/solution writing, short story, and cause and effect. Each chapter has material for both the teacher and the student. For example, the teacher section containins an overview of what an information report is, what information reports are used for, and the best ways to help students master this type of writing; how to use the graphic organizer for information reports; and notes on the four prompts to be used to help teach students about information reports. The student’s section of each chapter includes the graphic organizer, the revision guide and grading rubric, the information sheet (where the writing style for that chapter is explained and some teaching points are detailed), and the four writing prompts (each with three parts to walk students through what is expected of them as they try this kind of writing). The lessons covering these different kinds of writing are tied into a number of state standards, and this book includes a correlations chart showing the state English/Language Arts writing standards covered in this book. Writing prompts were chosen to keep the student’s interest alive, and the amount of time spent on each prompt is up to the decision of the teacher and student. ~ Zach
