This book by Elaine Richard includes ten fun card games that will help improve reading skills. Each game is designed for two to four players, but the games can be altered for solitary or larger group play. Everything needed to play the games is included in this book. Simply photocopy the cards from the reproducible book and cut them apart. The book recommends laminating the cards as well so they last longer. For each of the ten games, the book provides 48 cards along with an instruction page. The instruction page describes the game, listing the objective (the main reading comprehension skills that are being focused on), and any materials you will need for the game. Usually you just need the cards provided, but there are optional materials like a die and game markers if you want to play the card games and achieve winners using the game board provided in the book. Numbered directions on how to play each game are given, and the rules are simple and easy to follow. There’s not much reading involved, just fun games that help students identify main ideas, understand plot, predict outcomes, recognize cause and effect, and more. An example of the types of games provided is the game “What’s Not?” which focuses on helping students differentiate between like and unlike objects and use expressive language to explain logic. The cards in this game each contain four words, one of which does not belong with the other three. Players take turns drawing cards, reading the words, deciding which word does not belong, and explaining that to the rest of the players. If they are right, they get to keep the card, and the player with the most cards at the end of the game is the winner. With ten simple and fun games similar to this example, this book is a great resource for supplemental learning that will prepare students for standardized test and let them have fun while they gain skills. The book is recommended for grades 3-5, but students a little younger and a little older would probably enjoy it, too. ~Rachel
