While not quite a history book in its own right, this is a fascinating look at the Vietnam War. Each left-hand page describes a particular aspect of the war, like Yankee Station, the tunnels, the nature of small-unit combat, the Tet Offensive, politics on the home front, and atrocities committed - by both sides. Most of these are one page, though some go on to the next left-hand page, with four to five paragraph points. Every right hand page is completely filled with a picture. Some of them are informational - pictures of bunkers thought to be nuclear launch sites, generals’ meetings, and troop columns. Others touch the personal side of the war - a soldier with both an M-16 and a guitar strapped across his back, a wounded soldier waiting to be taken away from Hamburger Hill, a paratrooper carrying a young boy, or an honor guard watching as flag-draped coffins are unloaded from a transport plane. There aren’t any gruesome pictures, but there are, of course, discussions of casualties and deaths. Besides the main text, a small “Quick Facts” block gives additional information. An excellent look at the war and the men and women that fought it. hc, 128 pgs. ~ Mark
