Jensen's Format Writing
- Prepares students for college and real-life writing
- Logical presentation of expository writing skills
- DVD available with author Frode Jensen walking the student through each section
- One or two year schedule
If you are looking to develop your expository writing skills, check out thisworkbook. Expository writing exposes, puts forth, explains, reveals, orexhibits in detail about something. This style of writing is perfect to usewhen you want to inform, clarify, or persuade. Honestly, this style of writingis what your child needs to learn for college! It falls perfectly in line withwhat my college professors wanted. Luckily, I had learned this style of writingduring my high school years, so I was well prepared. You'll want to prepareyour child in the same way.
This book falls naturally into seven sections. You would be hard-pressed totry and do all the sections in one year, as there is so much to cover and thewriting and research process takes time. (Remember, college professors oftengive students a whole semester to work on one very detailed and in-depthpaper.) Section one works on single paragraph formats. Then in section twoyou'll work on the elements of the five paragraph essay and different formatsyou can use. Book reports put the five paragraph formats to use in sectionthree. Section four works on business writing, such as: business letters, letters of complaint, cover letters, political letters, and resume writing. Insection five, you'll work on the principle of condensation as you learn how towrite in various lengths as you reduce, abridge, abbreviate, shorten, cut, compress, compact, or distill your work! Now you are ready to compose a majorpaper and all its components (title page, endnotes, appendix, bibliography, etc), as outlined in section six. Section seven contains all the check sheetsand forms, tests, answer keys, and sample week-by-week schedules to help youorganize deadlines for the longer, more detailed papers.
This workbook is very straightforward in its presentation of this writingstyle, but it is very clear, concise, and helpful. If my recommendation isn'tenough, then maybe you'd be interested to know that this is also one of CathyDuffy's 100 Top Picks. 160 pgs, pb. - elise

it has lots of structured "expository" i.e. "presentation of evidence" type writing and it has a daily assignment schedule all worked out.
My son is starting a homeschool co-op for freshman year. We want him to be a great writer, and he is taking freshman format writing, and this is the book that was on the supplies list.
Required book for home school co op learning.
We used this for our older son and it helped him tremendously with his writing. It is a little dry but very systematic.
